The scholarly Upper West Side Soweto of Vampire Weekend’s debut sounded self-assured, but on Contra, they step out of their ivory tower with just as much confidence. In all senses of the term, this is a sophomore album. The band still flaunts the collegiate sense of discovery that made Vampire Weekend charming -- and sometimes too precious -- but with more maturity and creativity.
With Contra, Vampire Weekend make Auto-Tune and real live guitars, Mexican drinks, Jamaican riffs and Upper West Side strings belong together, and this exciting lack of boundaries offers more possibilities than anyone could have expected.

I hope Pavement comes out West to play a few gigs.
New M.I.A. Due This Summer• Kala's followup was produced with Blaqstarr, will be more personal and honest ("I don't want it to be gimmicky or silly or hipstery"), and includes the song "I'm Down Like Your Internet Connection" featuring Filipino Verizon workers singing the hook
Vampire Weekend release Contra today (were on Conan last night):
Been listening to this all afternoon and it's a great album. Definitely a different feel to it than the first one. Probably not as many catchy tunes that would stand out as singles compared with the last album, but I feel Contra has considerably more depth both lyrically and musically. The last album had a few songs that were substantially weaker than the other ones, whereas Contra seems to be solid from start to finish.

I kept hearing that "Cousins" song on the radio in Calgary and wondering who it was. I also have heard of Vampire Weekend many times, and wondered what they were like. It's nice to finally piece together and answer 2 questions at once.
It's also nice to know that the song sucks and I can stop caring what Vampire Weekend may sound like.
Moving on to the next overhyped Indie band...

LCD Soundsystem set to release what James Murphy says may be their last album under that moniker and that he is likely done with touring.
April 2010 release date.

You can only do that if you tell us the last CD you bought.

I think the last 3 cds I bought together were The XX, Band of Horses and Kid Cudi.
The last album I got was Dander Mouse & Sparklehorse - Dark Night of the Soul. It's looking like this album will not be released for sale unfortunately due to some label issues, so I'd recommend the download option. Great album!

I'm not getting the ressurgence of Pavement, I didn't think they were all that great in the 90's but they seem to have more hype and fans now for some reason.
Enjoying Broken Bells, The XX and the Dirty Projectors. Looking forward to a new Fleet Foxes album this year.
Off the new Lostprophets album which seems pretty decent so far. I get the feeling they may be one of those bands that are cool to hate, even though I haven't encountered many people that know them to find out if that's true yet:

I really like them, prefer their earlier stuff to the last few cd's but they always seem to pull out 2 or 3 good songs over the last 2 albums.
Thanks for the tip about Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse, I'm downloading it now after previewing a few tracks. Great stuff, I'm a huge Danger Mouse fan.
However, I still for the life of me cannot understand people's liking The Dirty Projectors.
