Expect the legal wrangling over O'Brien's contract to start in earnest now, with reported payouts of anywhere between $40 million to $80 million for the host if NBC were to be found in breach. And while in his statement O'Brien says he has no other offer and "no idea what happens next," there have been repeated reports that he's talking to Fox to do a show there.
It's not new by any means, and I'm sure many have read it, but I felt Conan's Harvard Commencement speech would be appropriate to post today. Read this and I dare you to tell me he's not the funniest man on television.
Now go out and create a show and get guests that appeal to the audience that loved you when you were on Late Night.
Start over.
Go get your Marc Maron's, Doug Benson's, Norm McDonald's, Louis CK's, Jimmy Pardo's, Mike Birbiglia's...
Make a late night show that's about comedy. Get entertaining people to do entertaining things. Find a place that will let you do that.
3 of the very best right there. And I totally agree, back to basics and your core audience. I've noticed that since this news came out, Conan's been alot more relaxed on the Tonight Show. You can tell he doesn`t really care about pleasing the mainstream audience, but just gone back to focusing on his fans. I love it.
For the record, it sounds like his most likely option would be taking over a show on FOX. That`d be awesome.
EDIT: Hadn`t read the last page yet, I see the last part has been mentioned already.
NBC won't allow clips on youtube, and we can't watch NBC web clips in Canada.
I hate this about NBC and frankly I think it is a huge mistake on their part. Its basically free advertising. No they dont make any money off of it, but they'd be opening themselves up to a new generation and might gain a few new viewers.
Jimmy Kimmel Live clips are blocked in Canada. Boo-urns.
My post above have those clips (or the relevant portions of them, I think gawker just took them from youtube and posted them using their own player). Kimmel was awesome last night.

Last night's Kimmel was great especially Elisha's stab at Avery in a very subtle way "It's amazing to see how much work goes into being a professional athlete."
