Crappy cgi made the movie practically unwatchable imo. I can't suspend disbelief and get in to a movie with lame effect like this. Van Helsing 2.0

In before "The book was better."

I agree that ending was better though.

What was the theatrical ending? Nevelle blowing everything up?

Yeah, but they both get away I think.

They shot another ending too where Nevelle blows himself up and lady gets away.

Ummm...not a fair comparison. Van Helsing had Kate Beckinsale in a corset. Nothing but win.

I don't buy it... So his whole life he's fighting against these killer vampire creatures who want nothing better than to tear him limb from limb, trying to cure the human race that only has him remaining, but then changes his mind all of a sudden when the big vampire roars angrily at him, so he goes out and gives it all up?

I'm not convinced that's a better ending.

How come they went with a different route from the original? This one seems much better.

He realizes that he has become the monster and that, in his pursuit of a cure, he has been kidnapping sentient beings and performing experiments on them against their will. He comprehends that he is the villain and chooses not to be one, even though it will mean that all of his work has been in vain. This alternate ending is infinitely more meaningful.

There was a cracked article a while back that mentioned this and said something to the effect of: "only in this age could an ending where two parties open up lines of communication and come to a peaceful resolution be considered 'controversial' compared to suicide bombing one's enemies." (spoiler alert for any who didn't watch the original ending)

I think talking openly about spoilers for a move that's been out for a long time is fair game.

I think the alternate ending does a better job of being more true to the actual intent of the novel, but I can see what HPLovecraft says, it's not like that's communicated all that well.

Maybe the alternate ending only works better for those that read the book or saw the first one or knew of the theme?

Although it may be truer to the original material, I don't think it works well within the context of the movie adaptation. In the novel the vampire's are shown to be semi-intelligent (some of them) and to even have their own society. In the movie they're just mindless monsters... This ending suddenly changes our whole perception of them, and, to me anyway, comes across as a bit unbelievable with the movie Neville just so easily giving up and even apologizing to them. The vampire love is a bit much, too, in the context of the movie, anyway.

All my opinion, of course. I think it could have worked if what came before it was different.
