I have heard several variations to this. Yes, tapping the one shoulder is one. Also if someone brushes their hand against your chips is another. They're really no different that western superstition though.

Another question while I'm here:

Some Chinese guys seem to have an unusual routine in the bathroom at work, and I'm wondering if it's a cultural thing: Every time they use the sink, they'll splash water all over their faces (like washing, without the soap), and then cup some water in their hand and slurp it up. I've never seen a white person do this, and I wouldn't have any desire to do so.

Is it something cultural, or am I just encountering weirdos?

p.s.: Interesting idea for a thread. I work with many Chinese people and am often confused by their "strange" ways.

I know a few mainlanders who seem to genuinely like their communist government. China isn't as stringent as it once used to be, what with commercialization and all, but it is still a tightly controlled state. Most mainlanders generally have good things to say about the government. I'm not sure if they're just saying that because they're afraid of some government retribution, but overall, the view seems pleasent.

My dad does that. I believe it's a cultural thing. I don't do that lol. It seems to be something the older generation is used to doing.

Sweatshop: I think that would be discrimination. Both sexes are welcomed.
eyes: actually, slanty eyes are less prone to having foreign objects (such as dust and grains of sand) invade the eye. And we still see perfectly.

Im not racist but i do find a lot of the things said in this thread funny, and it's the kind of joking banter that goes between my friends and I, for any race.. Glad to see it can be done all it good fun with no malicious intent and no one here takes it seriously

it's because the fortune from the fortune cookie is protects the virtue and honor of the paper. It is also a little known fact, that if you eat the fortune cookie with the paper without opening the cookie to check your fortune, you increase your chances of the fortune coming true by 12.3%

Yes, that is true. My mom says the chinese will start counting the age at the first trimester. So when the baby is born, he/she is almost 1 years old. The thing is, this belief differs from chinese to chinese, but overall, same idea.

Flashpoint, no this does not bother me one bit. I think it's a bit difficult for a chinese guy to break into the porn scene, not because of penis issues, but because the stern conversative nature of an oriental family will probably kill him.

Sorry to be correcting someone who is actually Chinese but the hatred for the Japanese is by no means limited to the older generation. I'm hard pressed to think of any of the young staff I work with who don't feel that way. Might be different with those Chinese who live in Canada or maybe even Hong Kong but in my experience in mainland China that hatred is right at the surface.

As just an example you should have seen the emotion from the fans for that last Japanese/China soccer game--Intense stuff. And if the Japanese continue to rewrite history they will either keep or rekindle those feelings in a big hurry!!!!

I guess I don't live in china see the kind of animosity towards the japanese. My experience is limited to Canada, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Singapore. It's what I have seen in these countries that I can speak for, and only the older generations feel that way.

The martial arts question I find interesting because when I came to China it was something I wanted to try. Surprisingly there are very few places to take lessons. I would have thought there would have been all kind of clubs available but NOT the case. Plenty of guys who will give lesssons but not setup like at home. My boys and I really enjoy our twice a week sessions and I now have a weapon against uncooperative vending machines--the "door kick"!!

I've answered this one previously, but I'll answer again.

I generally find only asian girls (of all horrific ages), and older asian men are bad drivers. Most young asian men are quite good drivers (with the exception of a few who think they're street racers). Of all my friends, I think there are only 2 or 3 asian guys who I can consider bad drivers.

As to why asian people are bad drivers? I don't really know this lol. I crap myself when my mom or dad drives, but it's like they don't see ahead to notice how traffic is flowing or if the lane they want to change to has cars lol. It's puzzling to me too, and if I ever find the answer to this question, I believe I will have somehow solved world hunger and restored everlasting peace.

Mainland China does indeed have lotteries and they show the draws on TV. I could certainly see Chinese coming over having to adjust to driving in Canada but other than recent immigrants doubt very much there is any difference in driving skill by nationality.
