I had no idea that ratings were so poor. I love Conan. I record the show every night specifically for the monologue. It's been awesome lately, despite the lame Tiger Woods jokes.

I think it was b.s. for Leno to agree to retire basically.. then decide to come back. Conan handled that with class but I don't think he was happy about that. Leno pretty much ****ed him there.

He didn't agree to retire, NBC in 2004 or 2005 wanted to make sure Conan didn't leave to ABC or FOX so they promised him The Tonight Show in 2009.
Leno was as surprised as anyone, this is in no way his fault.
Conan just isn't funny anymore, it could be because of Andy Richter (he certainly isn't helping), or it could be that he changed the tone of his show to be more like Jay and its not working
Either way something needs to change

I can't remember how Leno/Letterman did in their early days, but I'm sure at least one of them had low ratings less than a year in to their gigs. They need to give Conan some time to build his audience. I really can't see them dropping him this quickly.

Leno was really low, after about a year he changed the whole set and replaced the original band leader with Kevin Eubanks and then steadily moved up.

i had Conan set as a series recording on my PVR since he took over the tonight show, and just yesterday i removed it. i just don't find it that entertaining anymore. the monologues are usually lame, a lot of his recurring skits are just stupid (especially the vampire assistant crap), and then after that you just get the same vapid celebrity interviews and a music guest who 90% of the time i don't like.
a turning point in my dislike for Conan came when he had those ######s on from the Hills. half of his monologues up to that point were ripping on them for being ######bags, then he invites them on his own show? how incredibly hypocritical
now i've gone back to only watching The Daily Show and Colbert Report for late night comedy. their guests are always way more interesting and Stewart is an excellent interviewer in both the serious and funny ones. they also still have that late night edge that Conan lost when he moved to LA

Man, NBC really seems to be swimming and trying desperately to find something positive to build on this year.
As far as late night TV goes, I've been watching the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson since the summer and it has not disappointed at all. I can't even really pinpoint what it is about him and his show, but it's always so much fun to watch.

i think you may be the only one. i never caught his late night show, but he was terribly unfunny on The Daily Show and it would have never become as big as it is now without Stewart

They say worst November in 15 years so the numbers are still better than they were for Leno himself in November of 1994 - two years after his Tonight Show debut. It takes time to build an audience. NBC was patient with Jay (and Conan the first time around) and it'll pay off if they're patient again.
If they dump Conan you just know that he'll eventually be Letterman's replacement and it'll burn them at some point down the road.

Yeah over the last 6 months I've really been getting into his show. I was really looking forward to the 1000th show, but I'm not a fan of the puppets.

Jay Leno is going back to his 11:30 PM time slot, and it's looking like Conan O'Brien is the odd man out ... sources tell TMZ.
We've learned Jay's 10:00 PM show will go on hiatus February 1. After the Olympics, Jay will take back his 11:30 PM time slot. What has not been decided -- whether Jay's show will be a half hour, followed by Conan, or whether Jay's show will be an hour and NBC says sayonara to Mr. O'Brien.
We're told Jay and Conan have both been told of the changes. As for Jay, interestingly, he'll get what he always wanted -- his 11:30 PM time slot.

NBC has also put in an order for an unusually large number of pilots for the upcoming season:
Quote:
NBC plans to produce a whopping 18 pilots this development season, according to entertainment chief Angela Bromstad.

The network plans to pick up 18 pilots this season -- 10 dramas and eight comedies. It is already filming drama pilot "Rex Is Not Your Lawyer," also from BermanBraun, and is casting the J.J. Abrams hourlong pilot "Undercovers."

Looks like they are trying to restock the shelves and find new programming for the 10:00 o'clock slot. Seems like the pressure from the affiliates has won the day.

And I'm sure he has a multi year contract that will cost NBC a pretty penny to get out of.
