According to some skyscraper forum it only cost $1.4B to build. If you tried that here it would easily be double that.

Very true, that whole city was built on the backs of Indians. The Bow downtown is expected to cost $1.4B and will be less than half the height.

I was there in February and the outer facade was just being completed. It's a very impressive structure to stand near and look up at. It's so big it's hard to grasp the scale of it as there are no buildings around it to give it scale. It was still a construction site so we could only get as close as the mall beside it but even then it was immense. I can't imagine standing beside it and looking up or going up to the top of it. Pretty crazy you can build something that is most of a kilometer tall.

We shouldn't count radio antennas or empty shell floors when awarding the record.
What is the highest functional floor? That should be the prize.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tallest_building
For buildings, there is debate over:- whether only habitable height is considered.
- whether communication towers with observation galleries should be considered "habitable" in this sense.
- whether roof-top antennas should be considered towards height of buildings; with particular interest in whether components that look like spires can be either classified as antennas or architectural detail.
The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, the organization that determines the title of the "World’s Tallest Building," recognizes a building only if at least fifty percent of its height is made up of floor plates containing habitable floor area.[1] Structures that do not meet this criterion, such as the CN Tower, are defined as "towers."
CTBUH defined four categories in which the world's tallest building can be measured:[11]- Height to Architectural Top (including spires and pinnacles, but not antennas, masts or flagpoles). This measurement is the most widely utilized and is used to define the rankings of the 100 Tallest Buildings in the World.
- Highest Occupied Floor
- Height to Top of Roof (omitted from criteria in November 2009[12])
- Height to Tip

The Bow under construction in Calgary (to be the tallest building in Western Canada) will only be the 222nd tallest building in the world:

Welcome to the grey area. Based on the way the rulings go Montreal has a taller building than Calgary's Suncor Centre (formerly Petro-Can), just take a look at the diagram:
http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?searchID=45382188
Hmm, I wonder which building is actually taller?
Now add in buildings currently under construction in both cities and you get this diagram:

For reference the building in the bottom left corner is I'd guess something around 30-40 stories. My pictures are from nearby it and it wasn't small. Compared to the Burj it was wee.

Geez if you decided to end it all and throw yourself off of the top spire, it would take you about 8 seconds to hit the ground.
Thats a long wait.

Yeah, it'd take 8 seconds. That gives you enough time to receive a text and read "I didn't sleep with your brother, it's all a mistake". ooohh
