The term is sometimes used to refer to all of Southeast Asia. Historically, it referred chiefly to India.

Does anyone know how much of it is leased? That's a lot of space.
Too lazy to look it up.
I was watching an interesting documentary recently about how the Empire State Building was built during the recession and was considered a bust for many years as the majority of it sat empty for the first few decades...

I'm no engineer but I think the strength in the building comes from the foundation being slightly rotated clockwise as you go up the height of the building (I guess like a DNA molecule but less extreme) ... definitely a cool project but with all things in Dubai you wonder just how practical it will be.

The Burj Dubai doesn't twist.
There is office space, hotel space, and residences in the building, with a bunch of retail at the bottom.
The top 40 some floors are empty shells, too small to do anything practical with.
The exact height is almost certainly 818m. For comparison, the CN Tower in Toronto is 553m to the highest point. It's nearly twice as tall as the Willis tower (Sears Tower) in Chicago.
The Burj Dubai replaced the CN tower during construction as the tallest freestanding structure ever built on land. The CN tower has been passed by at least one other structure since that time as well.

lol, Engineering dick wagging at it's finest, eh?
When the Calgary Tower was being built, the engineers lied about the height, saying it was 16 feet shorter than it really was. When San Antionio, who was building a tower of their own at the same time, claimed theirs was taller, the builders in Calgary revealed the real height.

Living in Shanghai made me a big fan of vertical cities. I eventually came to really like being surrounded by high towers. I used to work in the Jinmao tower in Pudong and I always loved coming out at night and being able to gaze up at Jinmao, the Shanghai World Financial Center and the Oriental Pearl.
I'd quite like to go to Dubai to see the architecture there, but I do think the vistas from up that tower look very ugly and the location is of course really impractical long-term.

You can find all sorts of pics of this building and comments on it by skyscraper nerds (of which I am one) here: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...68#post4633668

Officially 828m, according to the grand opening.
It's also been renamed the Burj Khalifah.

I didn't know that. That is pretty interesting. How many square feet are we talking? I'm guessing turning them into condos would only work for people who feel alright about swaying in the wind all night during their sleep.

I saw the CN Tower for the first time in August, and it floored me with how tall it is.
To think that this one is almost 1,000 feet taller is just mind-boggling. I need to see it at some point in my life.
