Default Maximizing my PS3 experience.

I just received a PS3 for Xmas. I thought I would sequester the CP brain trust for some advice on how to get the most out of this entertainment system.

What games do you recommend?
How would I set-up a network for file sharing?
Anything else that is a must for a PS3 owner?

Thank you in advance for your help.

RPG's, racing, I will play anything that is entertaining. I bought Assassin's Creed, Avatar, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Tomb Raider (for the GF). Gran Turismo 5 and God of War 3 are on my radar, when they are released.

I like StarCraft, Command and Conquer type games.

I liked Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy, when I had my PS1 (my last PlayStation).

I am running it with a 32" LCD TV, 720p.

You would need to buy a new tv that does 1080p. Otherwise you are experiencing nothing.

I just picked up Oblivion, and am finding it to be a real fun one player 1st person RPG. Very deep and robust, lots of customization. It was one of their earlier games I believe and is a greatest hit now. Great buy for 20 bones.

Also got GTA IV and NHL 10, both tons of fun. CANNOT WAIT for FF13 (played the whole series right from #1 on the original NES) and God of War 3!

I'd love some tips on internet set up though. Do I just pick up a wireless router and link the PS3 to my computer? Can I run the PS3 to my shaw modem? How's that all work? (I know I could probably read the manual, but since I'm here anyway... )

Well of your modem isn't running to your computer, then yes you can plug it in to the PS3. Otherwise get a router and set the PS3 up for wireless...but if you play alot online, then hard wiring the PS3 to the router is a better idea

Yeah, I just got a cheap ($30) wireless modem. Easy peasy to set-up. I am going to hardwire it here soon, as I want to play more online and I dont want any issues.

I was wondering how to set-up a media server? Can it be done with any computer, using some type of software or do I have to have a dedicated CPU?

Got one in the living room, just this system is in the "man cave". My GF has to watch Coronation Street on the 58" TV. I know, I know.

Depends on the OS on your computer. If you have XP you need software, if you have Win7 then it's built in. If you have Vista.. you have my sympathies.

I am building a new PC soon, WIN7 then, as it is right now Vista (thank you for your kind sympathies) and XP. What software would you recommend for the XP?

I know guys who use this successfully

http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/

myself, I have Win7 and it's pure magic, best OS I've ever used and my machine and them PS3 sorted themselves out with no interventionfrom me other than turning on home networking.

I play online games via wireless with no issues as well so don't be afraid of that, just make sure your wireless is 802.11G or N

i play on a 63 inch 1080i/720p system, it is just fine. I prefer it over my 51 inch 1080p

so dont worry about that for now, they are both very sharp

Not sure where my thanks button went so THANKS!

Yeah, the modem is usually running to the computer, but I am upgrading out of necessity currently and have no computer so I could just run my shaw modem to it for now, and I could have at least some access for the time being.

Then when I'm up and running again I guess I'll just to do the router thing. I had a roommate for a while who used one to send my signal to his laptop so should be easy enough. I might try to route it directly though (not wirelessly) so I don't have to worry about protecting the signal. I guess I can find out how much I'll use the PS3 access now to make my decision.
