ummmm ... I liked district 9 but imo it was nowhere near Avatar. Not sure what you're smoking, but I don't want any.
District 9 was a documentary and then it suddenly just wasn't. That drove me absolutely insane. I don't really want to argue any further on this as I hate arguing with people who dress up opinion as fact. I'll just leave it at a disagreement.

Dress opinion as fact?
The story for Avatar is like a dumbed down, G-rated version of The Last Samuri or Dances With Wolves, hell it's cheesier then Pocahontas.
What would've been a KEY scene in the movie was just completely left out for no apparent reason (the scene where takes control of the giant bird) and not even attempted to be cleverly omitted it was just flat out blacked out, might as well have been a commercial break.
Tell me one thing good about this movie besides the CGI? One Thing.

One thing I really liked about it was that the pacing was very good. Cameron did a good job keeping things moving. Good script, in that sense. It's not a deep movie, but its fun.

I don't know if that scene really needed to be there... We saw him take control of the first one, did we need to see it again.. He caught it mid air, seems that it may be a little easier than first scene.
I really don't see that as a KEY scene.....
Also as much as I enjoyed it, I agree with the previous comment about how district 9 was a documentary then all of a sudden it wasn't...

It's the scene that makes the whole ending work. Had he not taken control of Peetry from the Land Before Time, the smurfs wouldn't have helped or respected him.

Yeah I understand that, but I didn't need to SEE him stumble around with a bird again, for it to work for me.

saw the movie today in Lisbon, Portugal.
Personally I thought it was great entertainment and nothing more. I wasnt expecting to be educated or walk away with new ideas on the way the world works. There was the odd piece of Yankee Doodle Dandy garbage, but in the end I think the money was well worth it. Thats all we can hope for these days with some of the tripe Ive seen.
Excellent 3D, and the visuals were stunning. My wife also hates Sci-Fi and she loved this movie.

I usually fall pretty much in line with the mass opinion when it comes to movies but I thought Avatar was terrible. I didn't like a single thing about it. I thought the story was childish and cheesy, the action was boring and predictable and felt that they cut corners, I thought the 3D was more irritating then entertaining and I just felt it was something that Pixar would make and not James Cameron.
Not even in my top 5 of the year in overall movies.
|
If Pixar made it it would likely have been infinitely better in story, characterization, and theme, so not sure why you say Pixar as if it's a bad thing...

Well, I took my wife (sci-fi) hater, my son (sci-fi lover with no desire to see the film), and his friend to see it in 3D last night. We were all blown away by the visual effects. It is hard to forget characters with such outlandish appearances are CGI driven, but there were times when I caught myself forgetting the environment was CGI a number of times. I snickered when my wife turned to me and said, "this was just like Ferngully" because I had read that comment here. She then told me "that's ok! I liked that movie."
Anyway, we were all thoroughly entertained for the entire movie, and never felt like it was nearly three hours. We must have a higher cheese tolerance than many here, that may be because it is cool to go against the popular trends for many critics.
It wasn't life changing, it wasn't profound, but it was a heck of a lot of fun, and I can appreciate the amount of dedication must have gone into the making of a film as out there as this was.

I liked this movie so much I am going to it again on Saturday.
The problem with movies like this is that it's "cool" or "unique" to not like it, so there are always those dufuses who try really really hard to dislike it.
If you didn't enjoy AVATAR, you just dont like being entertained.

It wasn't entertaining. The story, the main thing that is suppose to entertain, was non existent.
My Top 5 Movies in 2009:
1. The Hangover
2. District 9
3. Inglorious s
4. Law Abiding Citizen
5. Star Trek
All of those were far more entertaining then Avatar

Well that made my decision to not argue with you easier. Hangover shouldn't be in the top 25 of the year let alone top 5. Law Abiding Citizen should be in the 5 worst of the year too.

Good for you. No one gives two s***s whether or not you find this appealing. You've come in this thread about 20 times to tell everyone that you don't care. We get it.
We understand you don't enjoy it. Now will you please understand that we don't care that you don't want to see it?

It seems to me that there are a lot of people who went in to this movie not wanting to see it, and looked for things to not be entertained by.... Or just looking for things to dislike about it because it's a big budget sci-fi with a lot of hype behind it.

Exactly. Since this thread was posted on CP it has been the "cool" thing to hate this movie.
I'll admit Avatar isn't going to win best picture, nor should it.
But lets be realistic, this movie will forever change the way movie making and movie watching are perceived.
I remember hearing stories from my family about Star Wars coming out in '77 and people seeing it 3 or 4 times in one day because it blew them away. Avatar is the same. It is a phenomenon that must be experienced. And like most phenoms there are a lot of haters who want to be too cool for school.
And I'm sure there are a lot of people who just don't like movies like Avatar. That doesn't change the fact that it is a monumental achievement in film making.

I agree 100%. I knew he was going to go get the big flyer and I was praying that I didn't have to watch another 10 minutes of him catching it. It made way more sense to omit that scene. Not sure what dj is smoking.

No because it's not the highest grossing movie ever. When something is the top of a very valid category then I think it deserves credit

Often mood or attitude going into a movie has a dramatic affect on how you end up liking or disliking a film.
