Default Calgary Herald reporter and 4 soldiers killed by IED in Afghanistan

http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=2393229

Quote:
A Canadian journalist and four Canadian soldiers died in Afghanistan on Wednesday in the blast of an improvised explosive device.

Calgary Herald reporter Michelle Lang, 34, was on secondment to Canwest News Service and was travelling with a provincial reconstruction team in Kandahar when the attack occurred.

The Department of National Defence has not yet released the names of the four soldiers killed in Wednesday's explosion, but their deaths bring the toll of Canadian soldiers to 138 since the mission there began in 2002.
Details of the attack have not been released.

It was Lang's first stint in Afghanistan. She arrived in the country on Dec. 11 and was due to return to Calgary on Jan. 22.
Very sad

Wonderful wonderful girl. She was a very dedicated and talented journalist. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and the family of the four soldiers.

A reporter, traveling with a reconstruction team. I hope those Taliban idiots are proud of knocking off such an important military target. I will never understand that mentality.

My most sincere condolences to the Lang family, as well as those of the soldiers. Your bravery humbles me.

What I don't get is the military know where most of the Taliban are "hiding" but instead of carpet bombing them back to the stoneage they allow them come down from the mountains with bombs.

Stupid

They are probably everyday people hiding in and living in the towns and villages and farms that are also setting up IEDs. It's not such a simple war where you just bomb guys in the mountains. Also the military doesn't know where most of them are hiding. It's a guerilla war.

I have some friends who are overseas with the reconstruction teams right now and as odd as it may seem, I am praying for them not to be the ones who died, knowing that would be at the expense of another family being torn apart.

May they rest in peace

I feel terribly sorry or all the families. It's always leaves me with a bad taste to hear that a person, military or otherwise, has died for what I believe will be a fruitless effort (At least, unless Canada plans to stay in there for quite a while). The only fear I have is that the death of the reporter overshadows the deaths of 4 more soldiers...

According to a couple of soldiers (my nephew being one) 90% of the Taliban are hiding and planning their attacks from the small villages in the mountains and foothills, they tried a few times to "go get them" but they are dug in and know the region so well any attempt to go get them fails. they hide behind the locals and use the ol tug at the heart-string "we don't target civilians" routine very well.

I say ###### that...drop as many 10,000lb bunker busters as you can so their ears bleed all the way into Pakistan, if that doesn't work drop a couple of mini nukes and turn those mountains into pretty glass sculptures. The longer we fight this crap with their rules the longer the world is at risk from these ######ed terrists and their acts.

The Taliban and those like them need to be wiped off the face of the planet, their not even human in my mind..they are dirty ######ing animals with an incurable disease!!

Yep. See "The Vietnam War" for results.

Sad situation, strange when something like that hits so close to home.
