Omega 3s have been researched enough. Even the FDA has some positive things to say about it.

Undoubtedly. I was referring to Hoot taking 30+ pills, etc, a day.

You don't even know which ones I was taking. You just draw the conclusion they don't do anything from what exactly?
You would also be surprised how many you have to take 2-4 of a day so it wasn't 30 different things.

Based on the supplement industry in general, the ignorance based around health and the health industry, and the nutritional requirements of the general population.
2-4 a day? I've heard of too much of a good thing, but what about too much of a bad?

Ya I'm sure things like Fish Oil, Multi Vitamins, Vitamin D, etc. are going to really hurt the body by taking the recommend amount. I think you are confusing vitamins & supplements with products like Metabolism Boosters or Fat "burning" pills.
HUGE difference! Not even in the same category.

Again, it's not the few quality supplements the general population is recommended to take that I'm critical of.

But you said you were referring to me as a victim of the industry. How is that true when everything is natural?

So I'm sure most of you already know this, but stretching actually is really important. I've learned this the hard way. Since about last September I've been having hip and back problems. They really intensified in the last few months to the point where I could barely walk.
I started to get some pretty intense pain all down my lower backside; including my hips, hamstrings, glutes, etc. For a while I couldn't even sleep at night because of how much pain I was in. I went to my doctor and she told me that I probably needed some physiotherapy and massage therapy.
First, I went to the physiotherapist. I had about four sessions and that cleared up a bit of the pain. He gave me some stretches to do three times a day and that really helped for the pain in my glutes. The problem was, my hips, back and hamstrings started to get worse. I'd walk by dragging my left foot because my hip was too tight to actually raise it off the ground.
I went to a massage therapist last week and she went to work on everything. She also gave me some more stretches to do and told me to put a hot pack on once a day. Basically, she said my muscles shouldn't be as tight and sore as they are for someone as young as me, and that the reason they were like this was because I'd been working out for about a year and never took the time to stretch.
So a few hundred dollars and a whole bunch of pain later, I think I've probably learned my lesson. I also haven't been able to workout since the beginning of March. Bottom line: take the time to stretch before and after working out.

Yep. I learned the hard way too. If you workout a lot and don't stretch it can actually make it worse too.
After hockey season last year and I had serious imbalance problems. Its taken till now to get it corrected.
I like the way P90X videos teach you to stretch before and after. Even if you don't want to use the whole program I would recommend following the stretching and yoga routines.
Also, a foam roller works great too. For $50 and some motivation to do it everyday of the week you can prevent a lot of problems in the future.

What are your thoughts on people who work out when they are sick? I've avoided going to the gym the last 2 weeks because of a cold i have that makes me hack and cough and need to blow my nose etc.
I feel really bad not going and the temptation to go is starting to agitate me.

I am a huge advocate of "sweating it out". Generally when I don't feel well I will do some light cardio. I find when I am sick that I sweat really easy so you don't want to exert too much energy.

I personally enjoy hitting up the steam room when I'm not feeling well after 30 or so minutes of cardio.
If you're sick and plan on working out just be sure to clean your equipment when you're done. There's nothing worse than seeing someone hack up a lung and then leave a machine/bench or whatever without wiping it down......where's that grind my gears thread.

Sweating it out works.
But, chances are you'll make other people in the gym sick too.

Bump....
Looking for advice on morning pre-workout drinks/supplements.
I usually work out in the evening but am trying to change this. I want to get up, have something that gives me some energy without getting bloated/full, workout and then have food and my morning coffee after.
Anyone have a morning go to they like? preferably drinks/smoothies or supplements or mixture of both. Not food.
My workouts consist of about 45-1 hr weight training and then 20-30 min cardio most days.

I've decided to forgo going for muscle mass, I'm just going to cut fat and not worry about eating high protein and all those things, just trying to get rid of stomach fat that's been annoying me since Grade 8.
Right now I am running 3KM a day, I'd do more but I need to build strength in my legs so they don't hurt so much gradually. I try to restrict running on grass to vary the terrain, get some bone density in my ankles, and lessen the impact on joints.
I've been having raw egg for breakfast. Most meals are straight from the veggie platter, no dip. Some fruit. Tons of green tea.

Getting in shape is pretty simple if you don't over complicate it. I use some pretty basic rules.
Getting healthy isn't just about dieting. It's more of a lifestyle change and a lot of it's mental.
I'm 6'2 and was 216 pounds a month and a half ago. It might not sound too bad, but my body fat is high (28% approximately). Losing weight is EASY.
I'm down to 199 , my bod fat is down to 23% and I didn't even go hard for the whole month and a half. I wen to Mexico for a week in between as well.
The first thing you need to do is get an estimate of what your basic metabolic rate is. You can go to a few websites and find out to get an estimate of this number. It's basically how many calories you burn if you were to literally sit on the couch and do nothing all day. You then have to multiply this number by another number according to how active you are during the day. You also have to add on any calories from cardio, etc.
Once you get this #, you need to create a calorie deficit to shed weight. If you eat the same calories as this #, you should maintain your weight. 500 calories is usually the starting point where you would lose 1 pound/week. I went more hardcore to start off and made a good 800 deficit. Sometimes up to 1000. Try this for 2 weeks. You will have a better understanding of your calorie maintenance once you see how much weight you are losing.
You should also drink a lot of water. One thing that i think is really important if you want to lose weight (maybe a lot of weight) is to eat enough protein. I eat 1 gram of protein per lean body pound. lean body weight is your overall weight minus the amount of fat weight you have in pounds. This will really help so you don't lose too much muscle mass if you are somebody trying to burn off a lot of weight. You want to lose weight, but you should also preserve your muscle as much as you can.
Cardio is optional. As long as a person eats a wide variety of meals and cuts out a lot of junk, you will shed off weight without cardio or strength training.
I also stopped eating past 830pm-900pm. Sometimes I spread my meals out throughout the day because it's supposed to help speed up your metabolism. I also know guys who eat even 1 big meal a day, stay under their calorie maintenance, and are ripped. I drink 2 Whey protein shakes a day because I cannot get enough protein strictly from food.
I cut out pop. I've been drinking Diet for the past 8 years so I still have diet here and there, but Pop, a lot of juices, lots of sugar in coffee, etc can add up the calories really fast. It's also good to have a cheat day even once a week. Just don't overdue it.
I also cut out bread almost 100%. If I ever eat it, I'll eat brown whole grain bead.
One last hint I have is if you want to do cardio and maximize fat loss, do HIIT (High Interval Intensity Training). Don't just go on the treadmill for 1 hour or more on one constant speed. Do a fast walk on a speed of 3.5 or 4 for 3 minutes or so. Then raise it up to 7 or 8 and run like hell for 20 seconds to 1 minute. Go back to the low walking speed and repeat 5-8 times.
I know i scrambled a lot in there, but just follow the main rules. Create a calorie deficit, get enough protein, and drink lots of water. You are GUARANTEED TO LOSE WEIGHT and get in shape by adding strength training. All of my pants right now barely fit me (as in they fall off)

I'm giving some love to swimming in this thread. As mentioned above, I injured myself pretty bad and was off working out for a long time. I forced myself to go back about 4 weeks ago and did myself in again.
During that time I started going to the pool and it was great. I'd go for about 15-20 min each night and it really helped me stay in decent shape while I healed up.
I'm still not fully healed and have been advised not to do any running, squats, heavy-lifts, or a really high number of reps. The cardio I can do is the elipitical, bike, and swimming, with swimming being the best option.

i've been using "Super Pump" as a preworkout drink, and it's absolutely amazing.
to the point, i'm a bit worried about it. Does anyone have any info/feedback on this product? I haven't seen any real negatives in my research, but i'm lifting some pretty huge weight after starting up on this...

I've been using superpump on and off for about a year and I absolutely love it. I just wouldn't take it too close to bed time. I've had times where I've taken it within 3 hours of bed time and I can't fall asleep. Ever try running with this stuff? You have so much energy you feel as though you can run forever!
