Default Fiber Optic cable and Sony Dream System.

ok, so here goes...

Two years ago we bought a Sharp Aquos 1080p 46" TV.
At the same time I bought the Sony Dream system with 5 disc DVD system.
we have starchoice satellite, no pvr.
I've got it all hooked up and working fine.
Here's the problem....
I have my Starchoice receiver running a fiber optic cable into the Dream System for the sound. Unfortunately, it only has one such input for that.
However, we bought my son a PS3 and would like to take advantage of the blue ray feature. So I bought an HDMI cable for the Aquos and a seperate fiber optic cable for the sound.
Having only one input in the "dream system" am I stuck with having to switch them in and out whenever I want to use the PS3 or is there another way to get a 2 into 1 kinda gizmo?
you'll have to forgive me, I am old and not that tech savvy.

You might try this. It's still a manual switch, but at least you don't have to switch wires.

By fibre optic, you mean the SPDIF TOSLink.

There usually should also be a coaxial SPDIF digital out on the reciever. You could have one on optical digital and one on coaxial digital.

HDMI also includes sound so you might be able to use one of the items with only HDMI

yes thank you
you are correct in that it does include sound. I just wanted to have the surround sound feature with my Dream system. The HDMI into the TV would only allow the sound to come out of the TV then though, right?

yup, that would work I think.
so basically, I hook the Starchoice satellite receiver fiber optic cable into this device and then also the PS3 cable into that device. Then I would need another cable from the device into the input in the the Dream system, correct?
thanks in advance.

sorry I misread it the first time when I read your message.
that might work. I will have to go look at the dream system again and also what kind of output I have available on the PS3.
thanks

I have one of these and it works fine. Another option is TVs often have a toslink out, so you can sometimes use the TV as a switch although you may not get 5/1 digital audio.

If the specs I have found are correct, your system has 3 coax inputs for digital audio. Just go buy one of those optical->coax converters from Monoprice and leave it plugged in all the time. I used to have to swap audio cables and it drove me nuts.

kind of weird but i have pretty much the exact same setup (tv and sound system) and I have my Bell satellite and Blu-ray all hooked up to it.

- I HDMI'd the video directly from the blu-ray, sat box & receiver(dvd out) to the tv.
- I used the optical output from the blu-ray to the receiver sat/cable input
- I used the component audio from the sat box to the component receiver sat/cable input

You have to change the tv inputs for each device but i use a Logitech 880 universal remote. So when i select an activity the tv video outputs change.

You don't have to change the function from Sat/Cable on the reciever when using the blu-ray(ps3), the audio signal will take over when powered on.

Works like a charm!
