IPOD Touch Wi-FI Problems

So I bought my wife the IPOD touch for X-mas, but the damn thing won't connect to our wireless network. I select our network from the available list, put our password it, and all I get is "Unable to join network". Anyone else have this problem or know of any potential solutions?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Make sure you have the right password. I mean like actually make sure it's right... not just assume it's right. That error message is pretty generic and it usually means that your credentials are incorrect. Start with the simplest thing (check password) and work your way out from there.

Then check the security setting on the router. Look at the protocol itself and make sure you're not using hardware filtering (MAC address) or something like that. Touches are usually pretty friendly when it comes to wifi.

I remember having a problem like this at my friends house. Can the iPod do wireless N? I think it might have been that his router wasn't set to dual mode, and my iPod could only do G.

I could be wrong but dual mode refers to its ability to operate at either 2.4 or 5 Ghz, not the speed of the router. I have an N wireless router but also have a G laptop that has no problem using it, just operates at the slower speed.

Sure it will, as long as the N router is configured (as 99% are by default) to also support b/g clients.

This happens to me every couple of months. All I need to do is give the router a quick unplug/plugin and it fixes the problem. That's all I have.

I don't know if this would be a problem for you, but most residential routers will have a limit of how many devices can connect wirelessly to the network through that router.

I know with mine, I can only connect 4 wirelessly. Once there is 4, no one else can get onto the wireless network.

Wow, that is brutal. I have a minimum of 7 wireless clients floating around the house at any given time (2 AppleTV's, PS3, couple of laptops, internet radio, iPod Touch)

I meant that actually.

I know I've had problems in the past with the configuration being wrong.

Thanks for the help guys. I was able to figure it out. My router was configured for only N connections. I changed it to mixed and it has worked ever since.
