Sony Blu-Ray Player Trouble
This particular model is BDP-S360. I just got it today with a 40" Dynex LCD 1080p (was only $500) from Future Shop, and can't seem to get the blu-ray player to play.
This one works exactly like a Playstation3. It has the menus that scroll across such as:
Settings - Pictures - Music - Video.
You should be able to go to Video and select the DVD picture to play. Mine only has a Folder which says BD Data, and leads me nowhere but to delete memory off the 2GB external USB stick I bought for it (which I thought I needed.)
I have went all through troubleshooting and every menu possible.
Is it because this blu-ray player is only compatable with other Sony's? Cheap HDMI cable? (I cheaped out on the HDMI cable)
Anyone know what to do? I know it's a long shot. Chances are I'll just take it back tomorrow... I have been to Future Shop twice today... Boxing Day. *shudders*

I don't own one, but if are you trying it with the usb stick still plugged in? With my dvd player, it has two modes... one usb and the other dvd. If I'm able to see the usb on screen, then I would be unable to play a dvd.

Does your player work on other displays? Have you tried to use component cords? Have you updated your firmware?
I read this on CNET :
http://reviews.cnet.com/blu-ray-play...tml?tag=txt;uo
It could be that your TV does not accept the HDMI cord, though I have never heard of this before. Try using component cords and see if they work.
Though I probably don't need to ask, do you have a disc in the machine?

What movie are you trying to play? Maybe it needs a firmware update to play the movie you are trying to play?

Yea it needs to recognize an external memory stick in order to work. (At least I thought so, I still haven't got it to work so maybe not.)

Hmmmm.. that article might be the reason. Tho the HDMI cord is the same brand as the TV (Dynex) I thought it would be ok. I'm going to try it the other two outputs (right now it's in HDMI2, this tv has 3)

The Hangover and Inglorious Basterds both won't work. Please tell me this blu-ray doesn't need to be connected to the internet. Because it can.

When you put the BD in, there should be a new option that appears - "BD Movie" or something like that. Also, the front of the player should have a blue light on it appear.

As far as I know, these movies are both BD 2.0. You probably need to update your firmware.

Yea it's not poppin up. I'm thinking it has to do with this HDMI cord issue.
I just tried it in the other 2 outputs and nothing. It's either the cord or because the Sony player's HDMI is not backwards compatible (according to that review.)
I don't know if it's even worth it to buy a new cord or to just swap it for a different blu-ray player.

Not the cord. If it was the cord you'd see nothing at all.
BD2.0 is irrelevant as well.

Here's the menu screen btw:
A little picture of a disc should pop up like on a PS3 and you should press enter to play. You should have that and the file folder that says BD Data. All I have is the Data folder.

I see.
So it's the Sony player's HDMI output not being backwards compatible that is causing the issue... me thinks.
Well it's looking like I have to bring it back. Arg I hate repackaging.

No, it's probably just a bum unit. Laser's probably broken.

Well I'm definitely taking it back now! Stupid Sony making it complicated.
Disc go in, disc play. Geezus is that so hard?

You're getting that screen so I don't think it's the HDMI version thing, from that review you would get no video beyond the power on splash screen.
Do the firmware update before returning it, doesn't hurt. If you can't connect a network cable (or if it doesn't support network connection) you should be able to go to Sony's site and download a CD or DVD image with the firmware update on it, burn that, and update it that way.

Ok I'm going to give that a shot.
I could only find the update on this site:
http://www.sony-asia.com/support/download/347701
It says it's for Asia-Pacific but here's hoping it works anyways. I see now I need the update too as my version number is 006 and this update is for 007.... Bond

Looks like this firmware update doesn't want to work. My cd burning software won't recognize the .exe file which is what I feared. I have a program called LiquidCD for Mac.
Edit: nm

Got the update on cd and put it in the blu-ray player.... nothing.
Tried the american version of the update too (same file) and still nothing. The best way to update this one would be to connect it right to the internet. Unfortunately I use wireless for my Mac and 360.
Yikes... it's not looking good for the Sony!
