Chief Glenn Hudson and the four band councillors of the Peguis First Nation were paid between $206,000 and $311,000 each in compensation last year.

Still, the practice is especially common and egregious among on-reserve politicians because leaders' salaries are not drawn from the local taxes, but rather from Ottawa.

As much as aboriginals like to blame Ottawa and the rest of this for the conditions on reservations, a lot of the problems are based around the leadership of these bands who draw massive salaries and run the reservations like their own personal ATM.

With the amount of money that goes out to these groups there's now way that they should be in as bad of shape as they are.

I've always advocated that there needs to be an open and auditable financial system that ensures that the money goes where its needed, not to the chiefs who then distribute the money as they see fit.

As the end of the day though the reservation system simply has to go.
