Default Parts of NC and VA are gonna look alot like Calgary this time tomorrow

Just watching the forecast and it says that our area will receive 10-26 cm of snow starting tomorrow afternoon. Not a big deal for those who are used to seeing such events, but in this part of the world it spells disaster as they simply dont have enough equipment to deal with such volumes.

Nevermind the fact that i dont think they even stock winter tires in the tire outlets, the vast majority of people down here have absolutely no clue how to drive in said weather. It goes without saying the roads will be in complete and utter chaos if this happens. Ive been through this only a couple times since leaving Calgary and I remember how much I miss a well equipped city/area than one that isnt. Coupled with the fact that homes here are not built to the same codes as far as insulation and whatnot because of the climate difference and the power almost always goes out in heavy snowfalls, this should be a beauty.

Will head into work for a couple of hours in the AM, head to the supermarket and liquor store around 11 and then batten down the hatches for a few days as wee live on top of a mountain and it is impossible to navigate when that much snow/ice happens.

Cant wait.

True but the weather looks like it's around freezing. Should melt quickly?

Perhaps you should do a fundraiser for local minor hockey by giving a seminar on driving in wintery conditions?

Then take a video tape and tape everyone leaving and post it on here for us to see.

Looks like slightly warmer temperatures in Chattanooga tomorrow, with plenty of rain. I trust since you'll be holed up atop Mount Transplant that you will be watching the Griz win their 3rd National title on 'The Deuce'?

Unfortunately minor hockey is dead for good in this area as the city in all its infinite wisdom decided they couldnt afford to put ice in the arena this year because of budget cuts and the economy. Closest thing left is roller hockey....but that might be a hoot in the snow!

Soooooooo.....

Started about 7 AM and dropped like 3" in about 90 minutes...i made t to the store but simply was way to much to get back up the hill, and abandoned the RAV4 down by the pool and hoofed the rest home.

It then stopped snowing and turned to rain for about 30 minutes (which made an inch of compacted ice), and then turned back into snow and it aint stopped since. I just went to take the dog for a mini-walk, and when i realized the snow was too deep for her wee legs to manouver, I went and got a ruler and measured.....7" and absolutely coming down harder than ever.

Im guessing we end up with way over a foot when all is said and done and I lose power for at least a day.

No video...here is some pictures taken by locals however...

This is a part of an Interstate, not a parking lot

This is the Blue Ridge Parkway...a busy ROAD most times...

A bit North of us, and they got close to 18"

A common sight everywhere...

Also common were rolled vehicles and downed trees...

I am about to head out and see if i can retrieve my vehicle and get it home. The problem mostly is there was a bit of a melt late yesterday afternoon before temps fell again to cause yet more freezing.

I was right about power loss as well...it was strange though as we lost it Fri Night about 5:30, then it popped back on around 9 and i was thrilled. Til 11 Fri night. Went out again and didnt come back on til 6 last night...was a chilly night in the ole homestead for sure.

do people even know what winter tires are there? it's a very valid argument on these boards every winter, but i could see why no one in that area would own a set or know how to drive in that much snow

Pretty hard to justify using winter tires in these areas. I would just keep a set of chains in my trunk for emergencies.

I would think, on average, that winter tires would be a necessity maybe 5 days a year....meaning you would only be tearing up both your tires and the road most of the time.
