The Scanner Price Accuracy Voluntary Code
Wow, I just found about this code last week after reading one of those stickers on the cashier station at the Grocery store and was amazed we had something like this in Canada. Since then, I managed to get a few free items from Superstore and Canadian Tire by being more alert when the Cashier scan my purchases.
Quote:
How does the code work?
If the scanned price of an non-price ticketed item is higher than the shelf price or any other displayed price, the customer is entitled to receive the item free, up to a $10 maximum. When the item has a price tagged, the lowest price applies. When identical items are incorrectly priced, the second one will be sold at the correct price. Under this code you are eligible

Finally, something that makes stores accountable for misleading consumers with false pricing.
Anyone else aware of this code?

Yup. I watch MarketPlace every week.
Wendy did a study of which STORES knew about this policy and found that most stores did not. Even the ones that have signed on. They went to a Walmart and found something that rang in wrong. They took it to the customer service counter and claimed that their item that had a shelf price of $4.97 rang in at $5.97. Customer service said they would give her the $1 difference. She said no and said she, under this policy, should get the item for free. They called the manager, the manager looked it up and relented. It was the same story at several other stores that they went to.
I dunno how useful this is. If it were a $50 item that rang in at $80, I'd argue it. But if it was a $2 item that rang in at $3, I doubt I'd stand in line at the customer service desk to fight for my loonie and twonie.

Most grocery stores, in Ottawa at least, have it posted on the cashes somewhere. The cashiers are usually oblivious to this but when you can point to it, they relent pretty quickly.
But there is a $10 max off an improperly priced item so you're not going to get an $80 item for free.

We had one of these signs posted in electronics at Superstore when I worked there. I had a customer purchase a TV that rang in $30 more than what the label read, and he pointed the sign out to me. Of course, I was confused.
Of course, he wasn't going to get a $247 TV for free, so we sold it to him for the price that was on the label. He was fine with that. The point is, that sign was up there for I don't know how long, and I was completely unaware of it.

Many times at Sobey's and Superstore I've received lots of free items due to this policy.

How do you keep track of it? Do you write down how much each item was as you put it in the cart?

One thing is customers tend to confuse the scanning code of practice with things being simply placed in the wrong position on the shelf. If an item is in front of the wrong tag, they then make a scene.

I had to deal with that when I was making money for university at Kmart. There would be a basket of sandals for $10 and someone tosses a pair of $40 workboots in the bin. Next thing you know there is a customer at the front desk complaining that they found the workboots in the $10 bin and they want them for that price.

We generally have a list and know what we are purchasing (sometimes prices as well). We just keep an eye and know what is on sale and what not.
The cashier has even mentioned it to us at checkout about 3 times, when we weren't paying attention.

I find Walmart to be the worst for items priced wrong.

I've had many experiences where the cashier has no idea what I'm talking about, and is shocked when the manager tells her.
Last time I used it I got a $10 humidifier filter for free. At first my g/f rolled her eyes at me, but then I told her that not only was it about me getting it free, but by me calling them on it; it forces the store to be more careful about making sure prices are correct.

Having worked for Safeway for a number of years this stuff happens quite often. With all the price changes that have to be entered into the computer each week, price changes do get missed - especially items that go on sale. Add to the fact that the average shopper doesn't keep tabs on what the items cost.

you just have to keep a mental note on the prices, I guess. But then again, I personally dont buy a ton of things at the store so it's easy for me to remember

good to know I'm not the only one who have a gf who reacted the same way. Except for me, I tell her that it's all about getting the free stuff, and any saved money would go towards her Xmas/Valentine's/Birthday/Anniversary gift

If the item is over $10, you don't get it for free but you do get an additional $10 off the correct (i.e. lower) price.
I've noticed it before but never bothered to read it until a cashier at Superstore pointed it out to us when a price came up incorrectly. Since then we've used it a couple of times, but only after the fact (i.e. walking away from the till reading the receipt and realizing that we were overcharged). The additional $10 off helps justify the time you have to stand in line at customer service to get it corrected (i.e. if it's only a buck over, is it really worth it?).

I never look at the sticker price or the scanned price....maybe I should start. Even though I don't think I would say anything.
