I don't understand the purpose of arguing weather golf is a sport or not, I mean really who cares, does it have any bearing on anything at all?

This is CalgaryPuck. If there is not a nitpicky argument about something, then it is not a good day!

I'd guess that your friend isn't shooting in the 70s on 7800 yard courses with 10 inch rough and 13 stimpmeter greens that wouldn't hold your friend's shot with a 8 iron.
If the following are the major elements of sport:
endurance, strength, power, speed, agility, flexibility, nerve, durability, hand-eye coordination and analytic aptitude.
Seems like the bolded elements are all the important elements that are key to being successful at golf. You cannot say the same about things like poker, chess, pool, etc.

Here's the original ranking of sports that Cowperson's linked article references:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/sportSkills
Breaking golf down by categories, here's how it ranked:
51 out of 60 in endurance
46 out of 60 in strength
27 out of 60 in power
52 out of 60 in speed
56 out of 60 in agility
43 out of 60 in flexibility
47 out of 60 in nerves
53 out of 60 in durability
21 out of 60 in hand/eye
13 out of 60 in analytical
Read their definitions to understand why golfers do not require a lot of endurance, strength, flexibility, nerves, or durability.

Shooting 70's on some public course is not the same as playing on the PGA tour. I bet your friend wouldn't break 100 on and major championship course on his best day.
I would dare you, your buddy or anyone on this board to go to the driving range and practice/play like a pro. Monday-Wednesday, you need to hit about 500 balls a day, practice putting for 1-1.5hrs a day, don't forget your chipping for at least 45-60min a day, and then Thursday-Sunday go walk the course (even have a pull cart or someone carry your clubs). Now do it all again for a month and let me know how your body feels. Since it's not a sport or that strenuous this should be an easy task for those who believe that. However I bet day two on the range you walk off that practice tee in pain.

I dare you to box for 1.5 hours a day, or run a half-marathon. Then, tell us about pain.

Oh sorry I don't remember saying boxing wasn't a sport.

If we are talking about the relative pain involved in various sports, golf is near the bottom of the list.
Sorry for the de-rail Vlad - I tried to splinter this topic off earlier in the thread.
Let's get back to the train wreck.

It's so that people who do no exercise whatsoever, but golf once in a while, can feel good about themselves...

From a physical stand point, golfing is pretty easy.
If we've learned anything from this fiasco, it's bangin' dem ho's that's the hard part.

Good one Cowperson that proves nothing. When is the last time Daly was a factor on the PGA tour?

Again where did I say it involved more pain than other sports? The fact is it is a sport, even if it is at the bottom of your list.

John Daly's stats. Sure he smokes and drinks, but is he really that good? The thing that keeps him in the running is his killer drive. He's won a total of 5 PGA Tour events, and only two majors in his entire career. He's ranked in the 180's for birdie and scoring averages, and 215th for money won. You can't say he's a real threat as a golfer. He's on the tour because he's an everyman. People like to watch him because he drinks and smokes and all that stuff...not because he's a great golfer.
I don't think he's a great example to use to say golf isn't a sport, because frankly...he's not that good. Anybody who is consistently playing on Sunday's is in much, much better shape.

Yikes. All we need is Flip in this thread so that he and HOOT can go at it, then it would become absolutely and completely derailed.

Hey, nice man boobs Phil . . . .
Amusingly, here's a blogger wondering in Feb. 2009 if Mickelson's slump at the time was the result of "losing his man boobs." Apparently he's looking trimmer these days but the weight loss might have been negatively impacting his game at the time.

If you could consistently catch flies with chopsticks, it wouldn't matter if it was a sport or not because you would be Chuck Norris, and if anyone questioned you about your choice of sport, you could just round house kick them into next week.
