It's a thread about some advertising and marketing awards that were handed out. It has appeal to people like myself who have an interest in the advertising and marketing industry, and it also has appeal to people who like commercials. Lastly, it has appeal to people who like Apple products, because they won quite a few of the awards.
Please, do continue. I'm curious to see what you have to say on the topic in the context you've framed it. Why did you not articulate your thoughts on these topics in your original post? Might have given it some purpose.

You mean the smiley, and the "Of course I had to post this with an Apple twist" comment didn't serve as flame-bait? Re-read the OP and tell me you don't think it would elicit the reaction it did. Maybe that wasn't the intent, but that's sure going to be the reaction on something as polarizing as Apple.

I started a thread a while back that I thought would generate some discussion, and Fanin80 jumped all over me.
I think I'll go ahead throw a challenge flag out on this play.
You posted some youtube video about a couple ######s picking a fight with some transit cops. I asked you what your point was, since you clearly didn't present one at all (on either side). You took offence to that and responded as such. I clarified my question for you, to which you took further offence... I then decided it was probably better to just skip over your posts in that thread, and went on with my life.
Methinks you have too many men on the field, if you know what I mean.
(Btw... Since I have no clue what I mean, it's quite acceptable for you to not have a clue either. I just haven't cracked a Rider joke in a while, so... you know... all that jazz, etc.)
People are garbage. There's nothing more pathetic than discrediting legitimate successes and accolades by hiding behind the 'fanboy', or wait, 'fanboi' excuse. Despite what is convenient for some of you to believe, Apple is legitimately better than MS at both innovating and marketing. This thread reeks of jealousy and envy. Give it up already, you're not fooling anyone.

I'm pretty sure I did. In fact, here's what I wrote in my original post: "...it's actually a pretty interesting list. There's a quite a few categories and they even have a parallel "Reader's Poll" for each of them. Super Bowl Spot of the Decade is pretty interesting..."
How is that not a conversation starter that falls in line with what I further clarified this thread to be about?
As for your other comment:

What I said was, "Of course I had to post this with an Apple twist..."
I meant it as another of my typically sarcastic and humorously self-deprecating comments (this time, with regards to the "fanboy" BS I always get hit with). You chose to read it as "flame bait." (In other words, I was making fun of myself and how I "of course" had to point out the Apple awards. The little thingy was because I already knew that the first two pages were going to be filled with garbage posts - hence, the "Uh oh..." comment attached to it.)
It's all good though. Now that I corrected you and you're aware that this thread wasn't intended to be what you thought it was intended to be... we can all move on and have a decent conversation.
I hate those ads as much as anyone (and I'm a Mac guy), but Microsoft made Windows crappier because they chose once again to react to someone else, instead of innovating and going in their own direction. If a single ad campaign from a competitors causes a multi-billion dollar company to shift it's focus, then there's something wrong with said company.
Don't disagree that it was Microsoft's choice, but I think it was a rational choice. Mac's campaign was undeniably effective (although irritating to me, I'm sure a lot of people moved to Mac because of it) and Microsoft had to respond to keep market share. That's why I hate those ads.
Anyways, I'm just glad Windows 7 is out and I no longer have to deal with that abomination that is Vista (wasn't even stable, and when a program crashed, it pretty much managed to bring everything down with it). Now to figure out how to get rid of the broken link in my Games folder...

The Windows 7 ads are annoying as hell to me, but I can sure appreciate their effectiveness. There's even been talk that Apple is about to drop the Get a Mac campaign and come up with something else. They might even revisit the "Think Different" campaign.
Anyway, the Windows 7 ads are great, but man oh man. That chick on the train makes makes me want to smash an HP laptop over my head.
I don't understand how these things deteriorate so quickly.
It should be obvious in this case.
Fanin80 posts something that is interesting, but also something he is most definitely a fanboy of.
A couple people crack jokes
Fanin80 becomes hyper defensive
Tada

I'm grateful FanIn80 posted the link because I got to read a good article, get to see a whole bunch of cool commercials and see some sweet print Ads.
But the OP could have worded the post in so many different ways that wouldn't elicit this reaction and possibly generate some useful discussion.
eg: maybe not mentioning Apple at all, and maybe somebody like myself would bring up how they have been very effective in marketing this past decade.
So I'm sad this thread has turned into a "fanboy", "not a fanboy", "MS sucks", "apple sucks" thread instead of "that Phillips Carousel commercial is pretty sweet, but how does that make me want to buy whatever they're selling because I still have no clue"

One last derail.
MS still has 90+% of the market share. I'm guessing it is substantially higher in the corporate world.
MS doesn't need to respond to the Mac advertising campaign. Which is why they never have. Their ads concentrate on their product not the competition. I have always thought Apple's approach to be interesting considering this.
For the record, I have both. Although I love my PC, I am getting much more into the 'cleanliness' of a Mac.
I meant it as another of my typically sarcastic and humorously self-deprecating comments (this time, with regards to the "fanboy" BS I always get hit with).
I'm not interested in getting involved with the PC vs Apple brawl, but aren't you an Apple fanboy?
Admittedly I never heard the term Apply fanboy until I read it on CP and I could have the definition wrong. But I would think you would fit the bill of an Apple fanboy. You own several Apple products, you always recommend Apple products and speak very highly of them, you always start threads about Apple, you are the first to jump to Apple's defenses when they are criticized and you even slanted your original post on this topic that wasn't exclusively about Apple to highlight Apple achievements. Is that not what a fanboy does? Like I said I could totally have the definition of a fanboy wrong.

You didn't "crack a joke," and I wasn't "being defensive."
You commented that Apple must have bought the article (which wasn't a joke). I responded by saying that people don't buy articles in AdWeek (which wasn't defensive).
You've since made two posts in this thread accusing me of being defensive, based off that exchange. I love how easy you guys have it: everything I say, I'm either a fanboy or I'm defensive. In other words, you want the ability to be able to say whatever you want without any fear of ever having to defend your points. How kickass is that?
Also, to whoever it was that said I could have just posted this thread without the Apple stuff... Really? One company won more awards than any other company (by a pretty big margin), but I'm not allowed to post about it? If this was a music awards thread and some band won seven of them, would I not be allowed to mention that when I created the thread?
I'm not interested in getting involved with the PC vs Apple brawl, but aren't you an Apple fanboy?
Calling someone a fanboy is the easy way out, and I just happen to be one of those guys who doesn't like to let people off the hook that easily.
If people have a point to make, then they should make it. They don't have to be cowards about it. They can actually try to form a valid opinion without resorting to name-calling or ######ed little drive-by posts.
What was so difficult about just discussing this thread without the "Apple = Hitler" crap and the "Apple bought those awards" garbage? Why am I the bad guy for not wanting to tolerate that stuff?
... but it's actually a pretty interesting list. There's a quite a few categories and they even have a parallel "Reader's Poll" for each of them. Super Bowl Spot of the Decade is pretty interesting...
is your grand manifesto analyzing this:

OK... As Bomber317 says, the actual discussion of the power of Apple's branding and image campaign is actually quite interesting to dissect - something I'd actually have participated in. With a better choice of words in your OP, you might have gotten an actual discussion on branding and advertising. End result, with your history here, and well known opinions, this just comes across as flamebait. Don't think so? Look at your thread on the new processors for the MacPros. People pretty much assumed you were trumpeting this as some exclusive for Mac ,despite the fact you may not have intended that.
You may not like it but your posts are "profiled" by others....

I said I was interested in discussing it, I didn't say I was a PhD planning to give a lecture on it... Maybe I don't actually know enough about the topic and I was hoping to be able to read some clever insight from someone else? All I wanted to do was get the ball rolling by creating the thread.
I don't care if people profile me or not, but when they get it wrong, they can just admit it and move on without having to make it my fault.
As for the Mac Pro thread, what other way could I have possibly worded it? The processors being used in the upcoming Mac Pros have been leaked. If people chose to take that as me trying to say that no other computer on the planet will ever use one of these same processors, than that's their thing.
You can profile me all you want, but there has to be a point where people start taking responsibility for their own assumptions. You can't always just blame someone else when you make a mistake.
