Until you reach the altitude where your extension cord unplugs, yes.

I totally agree
It sucks too since the airport service is not allowed to operate a taxi service to serve Edmonton, only the surrounding communities. There is a shuttle bus service which is much cheaper, but it only stops at hotels
Have to rely on the city's taxi services for a direct ride to the airport on Friday

I'm excited for this! My airport is one of the only non-military airports between Seattle and Minneapolis that has runways large enough to land these big buggers.

We regularly get Boeing in testing planes doing touch and go's, etc. due to our lack of heavy air traffic and plenty of open spaces. I hope I'm on shift, or at least get a phone call if they come through.

Been waiting for this a while and it is indeed exciting news!

Hopefully they'll make YYC a hub on one of its routes. Not a whole lot of exciting traffic through Calgary. Mind you they have that new luftansa A340 flying in... great plane.

Edit: Looks like the hubs will be Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary and Toronto. Woot.

Well if by new you mean an old A340-300 series, a new A340 from Lufthansa would be the loooooooong A340-600.

YYC actually gets its fair share of interesting visitors, unfortunately quite a few come and go in the early morning hours:

-Antonov 124
-Asiana and Cargolux 747-400 freighters
-Royal Air Force VC-10's and L1011's

The Boeing live feed is really cool, you can turn the ATC audio on.

I'd love to see footage of the test flights where they put the airframe through all the paces. I bet that'd be a pretty wild ride.

Gives me a headache to think how many hours were spent in the simulator training for said type.

I doubt that much. Test pilots are used for a reason.

This is the reason they do test flights so they can set the simulator program. I am sure there was a basic simulator based on guages etc but not near what you would have on a production model.

Landing vid

Really? I'm not arguing, because I'm sure you know a crapload more about aircraft than I do, but I thought when they would be running some pretty intense modelling of an aircraft like this during the design phase that they would have a pretty good idea of it's behaviour to create a simulator?

That landing was sweet. I assure you items in the overhead compartment did not shift during flight.

I didn't want to derail the thread myself with a discussion on test pilot stuff but I think it's interesting that you doubt they do simulator training before these live flights.

They must have the means to obtain the information they need to create a fully functioning simulator before a live test flight is made. It's in everyone's best interest that the pilots are prepared fully, and I bet that means countless hours in the simulator. Single engine landings...emergency procedure..etc

I don't know though, that's me speculating and I'm just a measley aviation enthusiast with a PPL !

I agree with Hulk on this one.
I've seen a few shows on the development of the A380 and they had some pretty advanced simulators to start training pilots on well before the thing got off the ground. Of course it isn't going to be 100% accurate, but they can come pretty close.

I'm sure this plane would be no different. Those pilots probably have hundreds of hours on the simulator well before they get into the real cockpit.
