I was oddly quite saddened when I saw Rita in the tub. I was always annoyed by her, but I felt so badly for Dexter.
Either way, I'm also glad that the character has reached her end...there was really not much else the writers could have done with the "Dexter is married and struggling to hide his alternate life from his wife" angle.

I had the same reaction. Watching Dexter realize, very gradually, that he isn't the monster he thought he was was really rewarding for me. To see him faced with such a tragedy for which he is ultimately responsible was incredibly sad....and I felt bad for Rita too...even though she's been pissing me off for 3 years.

Rita's character has been annoying me for this entire season, but thats the raction the writers were looking for. The fact that Trinity got to her was still one of those wtf moments. Seeing the baby in all that blood was more upsetting.
The writers will up the action next season with Rita not getting in the way of Dexters dark adventures. He will be free to stalk whomever. The older kids might get raised by the "goofy Grandparents"
The questions I have...
What will Dexter do with the money?
Will Dexter come to the rescue and give it to Arther's victimized family and will the money be a trade off to shut them up about knowing Dexter as Kyle?
Will Debra start to look into Dexters childhood?

He already stated he would "make sure" they get the money.

What an awesome episode. Now time for my rant (in white):
I HATE spoilers. I try so damn hard to not let them turn me into a raging baby, but here I am. I avoid this thread like it's full of midget porn, but I had to hear god**** Newsboy Calsen on X929 say that the ending was "Effed!!". The thing is when you go through 58 minutes and nothing "effed" has happened yet, the ending is a little layed out there for you. I pretty much figured it out immediately. I totally would have been shocked too because every Dexter season ends with that music and him talking about himself. I'm conditioned to not get excited for the final Dexter scene of the season.
I apologize for coming off like a gigantic whiner, it just gets to me so much. I know I'm not normal, so no need to point out the obvious. I was just so close to not knowing anything.

To be fair, all I had read was the Meth post that the ending was more cliffhanger than it was all neatly wrapped up so I was expecting something. That being said when Dexter got home and heard the message that she had stopped at home I knew right then and there.
That totally didn't change how completely and utterly effed up it was for me. I just couldn't believe it. One of those things I was hoping I was just dreaming and I'd wake up and the outcome would be different.
Just goes to show how intense this season was. I'm very rarely THAT into a show that I actually start flipping out because someone died.
Anyway, I hope the episode wasn't ruined or anything because that certainly was a shocker of an ending.

I agree that Dexter becoming human and controlling the passenger was a very good theme and provided the redemption that this graphic of show needs. However, in the end he is the Monster. Fate has shown him that he can't escape his passenger. The whole reason Rita is dead is that he didn't Kill Arthur earlier. Why didn't he do that? because he thought he could learn from him how to behave and raise a family. As a result of his noble goal to learn to be human Rita died. If he doesn't attempt to learn how be a good family man he still loses his family as Rita eventually would leave. Just beautiful writing with perfect symetry. Next year it will be his son that provides that redemptive quality in Dexter.
I would also reccomend that everyone re-watch the last scene with Trinity now that you now Rita is already in the bath tub. It is more amazing once you know this.

Great episode. Although being a father and a husband, it was very disturbing seeing that final scene. It will be interesting to see where the next season takes us.

I couldn't have imagined a better ending, especially with the simper-bot Rita finally off the show. I can't remember the last character I disliked so thoroughly. Now the next season there can be less focus on her phone calls interrupting Dexter as a recurring plot device, and more emphasis on Deb letting go f-bombs to discomfit whoever happens to be near her.
I think Quinn is going to go into a Dexter-hunting obsession rather like Deb's obsession with Trinity. He'll spend most of the season trying to prove it was Dexter who killed Rita, and what alibi does Dexter really have? "Oh, I didn't do that, I was busy killing this OTHER guy at the time."

that's why i avoid all live radio/tv if there's a well known show on my PVR i haven't watched yet. but even then i still got screwed with the Sopranos. i was still working in the Shaw call center when the series came to a close. before the finale aired though, Shaw sent out a staff email warning the customer care staff that if people called in complaining that their cable went out during the episode, they were to explain that it was part of the show. right there i knew what the "shock" ending was going to be and it made watching the final episode feel pretty meh

Well, I finally watched the last two episodes tonight. Wow, what an amazing season. It is by far the best of the series, and I've liked the other seasons quite a bit.
What saddens me is that the cast from this season can not be duplicated. Lithgow was magnificent, and I can't see anyone being as good as a nemesis. I even liked his family, even though they only played relatively small roles. Lundy was a nice touch for the first half.
The ending definitely shocked me, but it is appropriate. I did rewatch the final few minutes a second time. Wow, that was even better the second time around. Maybe a project for the summer will be to buy every season of Dexter and watch it all again from the beginning. This ending lets them go in any direction they want, and I can't wait to see what they do with it.

Has it been stated how many seasons are left for this show?

Maybe Dexter is the bad guy next season that is being hunted... who knows. He certainly is responsible for a lot deaths of innocent people now.

In my 9 months without Dexter I am definitely going to finish Six Feet Under and then rent/burn the the first 3 seasons of Dexter to hold me over.
Who am I kidding, I'll be done both by February and I'll have to watch the Sopranos from first to last episode for the 4th time and maybe watch Rome from first to last for the 3rd time.
Oh, I forgot, the Pacific comes out in March. That'll help keep me busy too.

No, but based on other similar shows like Sopranos (86 episodes) and Six Feet Under (63) I'd guess only 2 maybe 3 more seasons because Dexter is already at 48.
