Default Has anyone had their gall bladder removed?

My wife just found out she has stone in her gall bladder the size of a quarter and the doctor says she needs to have her gall bladder removed. Has anyone gone under the knife for this? She's a little nervous because she's heard of some of the side effects (Weight gain, not being able to eat all foods, re-occuring pain etc) I know it is a common surgery, but I was just wondering if anyone has any advice on what to expect.

Sorry I mis-spelled "Gall" in the title.

I did 11 years ago, trust me the worst part was waiting the 9 months and 7 attacks to finally get the surgery.

I had 11 stones with one being the size of a robins egg (they saved it for me) the attacks were friken brutal..no I mean ######ing brutal with a capital F.

As for the surgery,It's nothing, 3 small cuts (one just above the belly button, one beside it and one just below the sternum, literally I checked in the hospital at 11am and was home at 12:45pm. I went back to work two days later and made my baby boy on the 3rd day after the surgery.

The only side-effect I can tell is I never-ever get heartburn, I could eat nails and not feel a thing! anything else is bullsh*t IMO. I eat everything and anything.

The gall-bladder is a useless organ much like the appendix, we don't eat things that make them work properly anymore, this is evolution at work here, in a few hundred or maybe a thousand years humans probably will be born without them.

Tell your wife she has nothing to worry about and try to get in as fast as possible and get the damn thing out.

Hope this helps.

My Gallbladder went gangrene for reasons unknown back in 2004. The pain was so severe I couldn't even stand up.
They removed it and I was in the hospital for 5 days.

I've never been the same since (health wise), in fact my symptoms have been getting worse, so bad that day to day activities are sometimes impossible. It's a roller coaster ride, 1 day I feel great the next two day I'm in dyer pain and can't function what so ever..

Most people deal with the side effects after Gallbladder removal for a couple weeks at the most.
I've been suffering and trying to manage for 5 years now.

Good luck, I hope you are feeling better soon.

Thats insane, no offence dude I'm sure your serious but I know at least 6 people that have had their gall-bladder removed and not one (including myself) have had one issue because of it..bad luck? who knows, but it was great for me.

I think they forgot to take it out of you. go get an MRI, maybe a lawsuit is in order

The receptionist at my work was having stomach issues for months when they finally found her gallstones. She had her gall bladder removed the Friday after Thanksgiving and was back at work the following Wednesday. She had mild discomfort from her three small incision holes, which were closed with glue, not stitches. She took her pain medication for that and felt more tired than usual that first week after, but other than that she was doing fine. The next week she was back to her old self. There are foods that bother her and she finds them through trial and error. She has determined that right now she can not eat any cheese and avoids most dairy products as most dairy doesn't agree with her right now. She's only three weeks out from surgery though so that could easily change down the road.

I have (at least) four gallstones the size of golf balls. They were detected over ten years ago. Because of where they're located, my gall bladder and bile duct area function fine. If they do start bothering me, my gall bladder will have to go because they're too large to blast. I'm OK with that when the time comes.

I just had mine removed a couple months ago.... The reason mine had to go is because it wasnt putting out enough bile. Your supposed to put of between 33-40% , mine was putting out 7% but it kept contracting on itself trying to push more out . It was very painful. Anyway Had the surgery at 8 ish in the morning ( on a friday) , was home by noon. Pain for the first few days. By Wed I was working half days til friday. I was good. Only lingering effect is having to poop often and a lot of diarrhea. Doc said they had pills to fix it but its not to cumbersome yet.

My wife had hers removed. The only thing that bothers her is fatty foods. She loves chicken wings but now she can only have one maybe two.

My dad, aunt, and grandma all on the same side had theirs taken out. Apparently bad gall bladders run in the family. None of them had any issue with the surgery or had to change their eating habits one bit.
