If you put the iPod into hard drive access mode in iTunes, and format the drive (FAT32 on PC, HFS+ on Mac), does it format cleanly? That would be your first and best means of determining if the drive is shot.

Not sure what you're talking about here.
My 80g is fully functional but won't hold more than 5g's. The 60g won't even turn on at all and just gives me the sad face and says apple.com/support.
I've restored the 80g ipod since it stopped working properly but that didn't help.
I already know that it works, but it won't hold more than 5 gigs and if I try and sync more than 5 gigs I get an error message.
