I want to drive down to Calgary from Edmonton today. Is this smart and/or do-able?

Not smart but probably do-able.

I want to do the opposite drive. I hear conditions are worse in Calgary than Edmonton.

If anyone does the drive, let me know how it is!

Yeah, I can't even get out of my neighbourhood. I won't even get a chance to test out the highways.

Leaving Edmonton for Calgary is always smart.

Sigh, tell me about it. I'm only here for a year but it's already grating on my nerves.

Where do you live in Edmonton? North Side? I'm in the south and so I'm close by school, bars, and friends. Without those up here, I think I would kill myself... I sucked it up for 3 years, I think I can do it for one more.

The roads in Edmonton aren't that bad. There's a lot of snow on the ground, but it's nothing unmanageable. Like a typical winter... although I hear Calgary got hit real hard.

So I find out that there's huge drifts at both ends of our little neighbourhood and it's difficult to get in or out, saw a much of people digging out a car just a bit ago.

So I guess I'm not going anywhere.

Not as bad as the guy across the street, who literally has a 5 foot high snowdrift across his entire driveway (and yard). I was watching him walk between it and his garage door, could see only his head. No idea what he's going to do, that's a LOT of snow to try and shovel.

I'm in the south as well (I work at U of A) and I guess I'm being melodramatic. Edmonton isn't bad but I'm really irritated that the past two times I tried to drive back to Calgary were thwarted by snow storms.

Ah. I hear you.

The biggest problem I have with Edmonton is everything is so spread out. Going to Best Buy I have to drive all the way to the farthest south. Superstore is at least a good 20 minutes away also. Nothing retail wise is close to here. That's what I really enjoyed about Calgary.

I just drove Red Deer to Calgary, not too bad as long as you trust your car and drive for the conditions. I drove about 110 kph and didn't have any issues, I was defiantly the fastest moving vehicle on the road. Very little slipping, all due to the Nokians I have, made all the difference.

I took pics of all the cars in the ditch, here are few...

The conditions are worse in the city, on the side streets. My car is lowered and I need some good momentum to get through some of the intersections. I am finally home and the car is parked for the rest of the weekend.

I might have to work on putting the factory suspension back on my car...or buy something more appropriate for winter.

I know Crowchild wasn't great last night...might be better today, but I haven't checked yet today.

I just went out to Northland from Arbour Lake, and Crowchild was fine. The road was pretty much bare, other than a few patches. There was a bit of blowing snow but nothing that hindered visibility. The only tricky part was the intersection on the overpass turning north on Shaganappi. I've found all of the intersections to be horrible due to the snow that's just been churned up over and over again. Other than that, a pretty typical winter drive.

Well I just went to Starbucks and Mcivor blvd is completly snowed in. I had to drive across a field into New Brighton and double back.

Thanks to the winter tire thread for finally convincing me to get some all weather tires. I love my new Goodyear Assurance Triple treads.

Just got into town from Edmonton - it's not too bad. I left at 9:30 AM, Edmonton - Red Deer was pretty good. From Red Deer to Calgary, visibility got continually worse, but nothing that was too crazy for me.

As for the roads themselves, the wind has blown all the snow off so traction was pretty good. There was one stretch south of airdrie (near cross iron mills) that was pretty slippery, but the rest of the QE2 was bare and pretty good.

I drive a mazda sedan with winter tires. Took me about 4 hours driving cautiously, i was doing between 90-100 the whole way.

There are alot of cars in the ditch, I probably saw 60-80 in all. There was a 500 metre stretch north of Red Deer with maybe 20 cars in the ditch within eye sight. Must have happened last night.

I ventured out to HD this morning and bought a new snowblower. (after getting stuck in the driveway) The way our house it situated, we get 3 foot drifts across the entire driveway and I was tired of mild heart attacks.

Damn thing still took me over an hour to clear it even with a snowblower.

Side streets down here in Okotoks are terrible and the drifts are massive.

Lots of stuck vehicles in my neighbourhood. Nose Hill is pretty bad if you don't have winter tires.

I guess people who have really big vehicles or luxury sedans ran out of money so they don't have snow tires. Losers.
