It's not legal, except on private property. You can't drive one down the street, and pathways are for non-motorized vehicles only.
With the snow we had today, I don't think anyone's going to care though, as long as you aren't doing anything else that might make people upset.

It looked pretty awesome, and I wish I had one, but I was wondering if it's legal to be doing that?

You probably should have left it at "It looked pretty awesome and I wish I had one"

If I had one I'd going around on it. It is like that commercial with the cop chasing the bad guy and both are stuck pushing the cars, except I'll be moving and they won't.

When I went to UWO, we partied sometimes in Owen Sound. People drove their skidoos to "the Bar". And they danced in snow-mobile boots.

Gah, I miss my sled. Little Ski-Doo MXZ 440. It was underpowered and had a track that was way too short with too small of paddles for the stuff I wanted to do, but it made me a better sledder for it. I learned how to dig out of anything and everything. Looked exactly like this:
Man that thing was fun.
It was a helluva lot better than the boat of a 2-up dad rolls with from time to time...big-ass late 90's Arctic Cat Pantera. And it was a lot better than the first sled I drove regularly...a Yamaha 340 something or other. It was an oldie but a goodie. Rode rough as hell, but was great for cutting in and outta the trees cause it was so light.

Awesome, but man what happens when they hit pavement? The snow is deep but very uneven, wouldnt that do some serious damage?

No, not really, for short distances.
The track is rubber with rubber paddles. Over time, the paddles would wear on the pavement.
The skis would wear the most. There are little carbide rods on the bottom that wear out when not in snow.
It is common to cross roads, river beds, etc while sledding.

A guy used to rip up and down our back alley last year probably making sure it worked before going up north or into the mountains. In Quebec I have seen snowmobiles parked at local restaurants after heavy snowfalls.

In Upstate New York some of the Skidoo Trails are maintained better than the roads...
It all about the Tourism.
