Both would be far and away the best players for their countries but why play for Canada or the US when realistically the highest thing you can achieve is a gold cup. And may never have the chance to play in a the world cup, or the Euros
True, that goes along with the not caring enough. If there was some focus and direction out of the Canadian program you'd at least have a pitch to those players. As it is it's a no brainer for an elite player.

There's also the travel issue that faces Canada and the US. Players aren't all that excited to fly across the atlantic for matches, and in the case of Canada they're asked to do it on a bare bones basis. It seems trivial, but when you consider the grind that a professional season brings the ability to stay in Europe for internationals is a major plus factor.

Not saying you're wrong but when I was in Brasil the locals (in Para) pronounced it Hio. Maybe it's regional dialect?

And the whole area was either Vasco or Flamengo fans.

Leads me onto my best soccer story ever where we were part of a 3 boat diesel heist to steal diesel from a logging company for the village generator so we could watch Brasil/Argentina.

I'm not a native Brazilian but i've been speaking Portuguese for the last 7 years and my girlfriend is originally from there. We're moving to Sao Paulo next year.
You are right, double r or words that start with r are pronounced with an h sounds like we both have indicated. I think people are learning about the r/h sound but the di/de that are prounced as g's are another amtter.

That's a cool story by the way. Anything to see the game!

Ireland asks to be 33rd team:

http://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/2009/...and_world_cup/

FYI, I was born in England, so I support them. Nothing to do with hype or over-exposure. How many Brazil fans (in Canada) actually have any connection to Brazil?

That's pretty ridiculous. They lost. It's over.

Since when was a Jock qualified to laugh at anyone. Two words: Second round.

Keano agrees with you.

He still detests the amateur fools at the FAI.
Quote:
But Ipswich boss Keane said: "They can complain all they want but France are going to the World Cup - get over it.
Quote:
"They didn't take them, but it's the usual FAI (Football Association of Ireland) reaction - 'we've been robbed, the honesty of the game...' It's rubbish."
And Keane pointed out that controversial decisions went Ireland's way in the qualifying campaign, not least a harsh penalty award against Georgia which helped them to clinch a 2-1 qualifying win in February.
"There was one match against Georgia where Ireland got a penalty and it was one of the worst decisions I've ever seen which changed the whole course of the game.
"I don't remember the FAI after the game saying we should give them a replay."

Keane has had major problems with the FAI in the past though. He walked off the team more than once

so although he is right he has a bias

No-ones arguing that. He walked off based on their past incompetence and that he thought (rightly) they were a bunch of idiots in suits.

All he's saying is that nothing has changed.

Does anyone know on which channel and time the World Cup draw will happen on Friday? A quick glance at TSN and Sportsnet's schedules don't seem to show it.

Ah, there it is. Thanks, Pagal4321! I didn't even think to look at CBC.

10:30am Calgary time. There goes the late morning productivity.

Yup CBC has the rights this year. Hope they do a good job and don't mess it up, like putting matches on CBC Bold.

I found this article about seeding for the draw.

http://itsastraightred.blogspot.com/...0-seeding.html

Interesting how the author thinks Brazil always gets an easy draw. As a Brazil fan I agree but it's not manipulated, Brazil are just lucky!

It'll be really interesting where the US goes.. that would probably be the Death Group.
