X-Mas Spending?
RBC survey suggests Canadians expect to spend ~$1,200 each on X-Mas shopping:
http://www.globeinvestor.com/servlet...CE-RBC/GIStory
Heard on the radio driving in that Albertans are actually well below the national average, which I found odd, given how hard Ontario has been hit. Just wanted to run my own little unscientific survey on here - (1) how many people are you buying for and (2) how much do you expect to spend?
I'll start it off:
1 - $1,000

Including kids I will be buying for a total of 9, (almost all little kids though).
I would be shocked if the total goes over $750-$800. I'm not a big spender and spend more time on joke gifts than I do on the "real" thing!

Probably close to $1000 over about 16 people. Most of that will be spent on our kids.

Between my wife and I, we will probably spending about $900 on a total of 12 people (counting ourselves).
.... of course that doesn't count the $1000 I will be spending on new golf clubs during Boxing Day week, to replace the set that was stolen last summer.

Probably about $1,000 on about 12 people. I cashed in all my credit card points and Air Miles for HBC bucks in October, so only ~$500 will be out of pocket.

Ok maybe like $20-50 for my sister. Don't buy for friends or extended family. Also, I don't buy my parents presents either, so there is pretty much no one on my list. I'm not married and I don't have kids so that is several less people.
My receiving list is similar too. Just presents from my parents, and a very small amount from my grandma.
I love it that my family has a no stress Christmas. I don't even feel sorry for people that love Christmas but almost die from all the stress.

My folks never gave a crap about Christmas, zero presents. I remember getting tons of stuff when I was a kid but it was spread out all year round and not just on one day. Dirtbikes, hockey sticks, video games, Coleco rod hockey, slot cars, stereos and guitars.
Might get something for the new girl I'm dating, simply because she does not know and understand yet how I don't care about Christmas.

What's your rationale for not giving anything to your parents? If you're short of funds how about some coupons for you to detail their cars, one day of you helping them with misc chores/house maintenance/whatever, etc. Seems weird that you wouldn't get them anything IMO.

Every year I only buy one gift and it is (4) Tickets to Flames @ Canucks, Hotel, Ferry, etc for my Dad, two little brothers and myself.
My mom hates Christmas (although she spoils me ) and asked that I never buy her anything so usually I just make Christmas dinner for the family as my gift.
Well I guess you could count it as more than one gift but it usually runs me about $1,000.

The gf and I have already spent prob 1000 on decorations (first year living together and for me, the first year having decorations).
I'll probably spend another thousand on gifts for her, my bro, and my parents. And a couple hundred on gifts for myself.

My wife and I will spend about $300 each on each other.
We'll also spend about $150 on our son, and another $100 in a months time on his birthday.
I handle my parents' and my brother's presents, for the most part, and we spend about $50 - $75 on each of them.
Then there's the usual $20 office secret Santa.
My wife takes care of her family's stuff. I'm sure it's in the same range as my family.
