Anyone ever lived in Castlegar?
Moving there at the end of December for work, have been through many times, but wondering if the CP wealth of knowledge has any insight on what to avoid, what I should expect to pay for a place, etc..

Seriously,I spent a week there a few years ago, a little slow for me but a nice town with friendly people. nothing to avoid and if you sold a place here you'll be fine there I'm sure.

I went to college there for one year, way back in 1971/1972. I had fun while I was there. There is a pulp mill near there, the odor from it permeates the air. When I would leave there to go home for a weekend, all my clothes and everything I had with me, had the smell of the pulp mill on it. I don't know what it's like now, but after you live there for a while you'll get used to it. Also, you are near Nelson, which is quite a nice place. Also, you aren't far from Kootney Lake, and Ainsworth hot springs. I grew up in the area (in Creston, B.C.) - I spent a lot of time on Kootney lake.

My aunt, uncle, and one cousin live there. They've been there going on 30 years, and it has certainly grown over that time. It's a very pretty place. As Shin Pad mentions, going to Nelson and Ainsworth are nice bonuses. As my uncle reminds me, the climate's a bit better as they have a longer golf season than we do.
You're also only about a three-hour drive from Spokane, WA.
To avoid - bears. Seriously. They'll come in your backyard.

Jason Bay is from that area, as is Shawn Horcoff...  .
My Dad and Mom live there, great area for fishing and outdoor stuff. Ski hill close by etc...
Serious lack of work out in that area.....

I went to Selkirk College in Castlegar (96-97). I grew up in Kelowna so it was a bit of a shocker going to a smaller town. I didnt like it at first but It kind of grew on me. Quite a few Rednecks back then and got into a few fights cause I was hitting on "their" girls. lol. Me and my friends would also go to Nelson everyonce in a while which is about 45 minutes away and is a pretty fun town to party in. Thats about all i've got...

I worked there on the dam for about 6 months a long time ago. I spent my time riding my motorcycle, fishing, drinking, shooting skeet and smoking pot. I liked the place.

I have never lived there, but I would live there. Nice town and nice country there.
Scary airport to fly in and out of though.

What are your interests, 604? If you like fishing, hunting, mountain biking, boating or hiking, you'll probably like it. Some of the best skiing anywhere is around there - Red Mountain is legendary, and closer than Calgary to Sunshine. If you're a motorcyclist, the best roads in western Canada are in the area.
On the other hand, if you're a Starbucks-swilling, sushi-gnawing, theatre-going urbanite, you probably won't enjoy it. Except your weekends in Nelson.

That doesn't include the one-hour anal cavity search at the border crossing there. We got a total shakedown the time we crossed there. Like every second vehicle going across the border there is smuggling pot into the U.S..

Better have good winter tires if you are going anywhere. The valleys hover somewhere on either side of freezing in the winter which makes road conditions unpredictable. Lots of black ice and steep grades in the mountain passes as well. I know of two elk herds that frequent the valley all year round. You really have to watch for them in the early morning. I've had to brake hard to avoid a moose a couple times on the Bombi and of course their ae deer everywhere.
