another Xbox 360 RROD thread
Does anyone have recent experience getting a RROD Xbox repaired?
I sent my injured Xbox 360 (from Vancouver) in last week, UPS says it was delivered to Microsoft (in Concorde, Ontario) today.
What should I expect back for a replacement? New/refurbished? Any chance they repair my old one? The manufacture date was Nov 2006.
I've read some mixed reviews; some people getting a new machine and some getting a refurbished piece of crap that dies a couple weeks later. Most of the info I'm finding is from people in the US....I'm curious what's happening in western Canada right now.
Thanks

It took about 2 weeks total from the time l recieved the puralator box, to the time when the post man dropped it off. But I think I was one of the lucky ones, l've heard horror stories about it taking months, or people not recieving it at all.

I got a refurb back, well 6 really, but my last one has been pretty good. Other than hearing an odd scratching noise once and a while, it runs great. At least when I am hearing the scratching noise this time it isn't scratching my game like my previous few refurbs were. I lost Forza 2 because one refurb ate Forza alive.
You should probably get a pretty up-to-date one back.

I'm in TO, this happened to me about 2 months back.
round trip time for me was 5 days (and i got a new console). the repair shop is in markham which helped reduce the delay time.

I recently had the RROD myself. They shipped me a replacement system that I can only assume was refurbished, although it still had the plastic tab over the IR eye on it, and appears to be in great condition. Coincidentally, I never bothered removing that tab on my old 360. They also sent me a little card with a free one month extension on XBL.
I've been playing mine pretty steadily since it came back to me and it hasn't given me one little hiccup of trouble.
I think it took less than 2 weeks from the day I shipped it til the day I got it back, as well. Quite impressed with that.

I had the RROD last december. horrible horrible time for something like that to be sent through the mail. but about a month later i got it back and its worked fine ever since. now if only RIM could follow suit and send back a blackberry that isnt messed up i'd be in heaven

Be prepared! The end is near!
Seriously, I think when you get an error message/rrod the first time and it works afterwards, be prepared for your xbox to crap out soon. When you play your xbox now, does the screen seem snowy?
This happened to me a couple weeks ago. I got an E74 message. Turned the xbox on and off about 3 times and I kept getting E74 message and then after that it worked. I noticed the screen was kind of snowy. Soon after I got a permanent E74 message.
I still haven't had the time to send the xbox in - I'm using my old refurb xbox.
On that note, does anybody know where I can get a box and packaging to send the xbox? M$ used to ship you a box through Purolator, but they don't do that anymore. They send you a pre-paid UPS packing slip and you provide the shipping box and packaging. Does UPS sell boxes?

Hmmm, XBox 360 sounds like a real POS system.

They do indeed. The people at The UPS store are well-prepared for us 360 owners, too. Unfortunately, I had to buy a whole roll of bubble-wrap plus the box. I think the grand total came out to about $12 or $13.

That generation of them sure was. Cut corners to get more produced imo.
I was sent a brand new 360 when I'd sent mine in. Has worked great since (knock on wood). It took barely more than a week from the day I dropped it off at Purolator to the day I picked it up. The new one's also whisper quiet, which is awesome.

Thanks for the replies.
I just got the email saying the have shipped an xbox back to me, this time by Purolator. The Purolator website isn't tracking it yet but I'm sure they'll have have it on there tomorrow.
Any idea how long they take to ship them back?
Any chance I'm playing this weekend, assuming it got picked up tonight?

There's been 2 separates polls done that have shown the 360 failing for more than 50% of owners. Mines still good but I hardly use it.

There are different chipsets in xbox 360's. The latest batch are called "Jasper" units which are said to have a very very small chance of RROD'ing. Changed stuff with the cooling

Ha, I will believe it when I see it.
"ah right, new chipset, that is what the problem was."

"Of course, the biggest change is the newly redesigned motherboard, which should help alleviate the infamous Red Ring of Death problem. Attached to the motherboard is a new 65-nanometer graphic chip. This new chip will consume less power and run cooler."
few of the changes in the Jasper chip, RROD is an overheating issue, and that's how many people fixed it on their own (read: x-clamp replacement)
