Christmas Gift Thread

This thread is unfortunately inevitable.

What is everyone buying and hoping to receive this year?

I guess I could consider myself lucky as much has happened in my life over te last year so I only have to buy a minimum of 3 gifts. Suggestions?
1: Mom
2: Dad
3: Brother & sister-in-law (usually do joint for financial reasons)

I usually spend ~$50 on each.

Something autographed might not be a bad idea... if he likes working out, an ipod if he doesn't have one already. New nalgen bottle (its flu season don't use the fountains!) package with some under armor would be nice too.

I know for the gym the things I use the most are gym bag, sneakers, ipod, socks. You can never have enough work out socks. How much are you looking to spend? You could fill a new gym bag with a few pairs or shorts/shirts/socks/socks/socks/socks/socks. And then maybe throw some socks in there.

Gift Certificates. That's what everyone is getting. Unless someone asks for something specific I'm not going to guess.

And they're going to be purchased at Safeway so I get the Air Miles.

I do not give gifts any more. People have far to much 'stuff', in my opinion. I give money to the Brooke Hospital for Animals (http://www.thebrooke.org/). The money will be used to provide a vet for a month to treat donkeys in third world countries or provide water troughs for them or a sun shelter, foot care, vaccinations or something as simple as a fly fringe. I particularly do this for my god children and nieces as they are extremely fortunate and I think they need awareness that not everyone is as lucky as they are. I really hate to see so much greed at this time of year.

This is a good idea! That's a really obscure charity... how did you come across it?

I don't like to make Christmas time a preachy time to tell others how grateful they should be. I like to make it an excuse to give things to my loved ones that they need or just want as a token of generosity. Everyone can always use a new book or piece of music, I try to give people what they want not what I want.

Agreed. It isn't about spoiling people or giving people stuff they don't need. It is the challenge of figuring out what will make your loved ones smile the biggest on that great family day.

I have 364 days to lecture them about how good they have it and how rough others do, Christmas is all about giving to those you care about and making sure they have a wonderful day.

I do my best to try and give something thoughtful, useful, and somewhat unique.

I also do my best to personalize gifts to each person. That said, it looks like a lean Christmas coming from me this year. My thought is I'm going to give everyone calendars, but of photography I shot myself. It's something everyone can use, and has the personal touch of me making it, as well each month will have a story behind it (mostly my trip there, or a conversation starter like "Holy Crap he saw Paul McCartney that's awesome!)

That said I feel like I should get everyone something little on top of that.

My belief is that christmas should be about family time not who gave me what or what I SHOULD buy for whoever.

I find with gifts it creates unneeded stress at a time where it should all be about enjoying others company and looking past materialistic things.

Just a question though, does anyone else's family buy for cousins, etc? The GF's family does and wow does that ever creat a lot of stress in her life

Not really putting donkeys over people. The charity explains that millions of people in third world countries need their donkeys to obtain income. One donkey can support a whole extended family. If the donkey is sick or injured and can't work then that family could starve. The Brooke hospital just tries to ensure that the donkeys are kept in the best possible health and suffer no abuses.

I came to Canada from England nearly 3 years ago. The Brooke is well known in England as it was founded by an English lady named Dorothy Brooke. The history of why it was founded is very heart wrenching particularly in view of Remembrance Day just recently. It is worth reading. They truly do wonderful work.

One thing that I found this year is adopting an animal through the WWF. It is $40 and you get 30 back in a tax reciept. They get a teddy bear of the animal you choose, a certificate and information on the animal as well as a reusable bag.
