cmyden, you seem to have a very good grasp on the programs, sites, and how they work.
Last night I was going through looking for flights from Kelowna (YLW) to Sydney (YQY) for my brother's girlfriend.
For those not familiar with the Maritimes, Halifax (YHZ) and Moncton (YQM) are about 4-4.5 hours away. Generally it's much cheaper to fly to Halifax and take a shuttle or bus to Sydney than to fly directly here.
So I searched YLW to YQY
Then YLW to YHZ
Then YLW to YQM
all for the same dates, got the prices
Cheapest being YLW to YHZ return
Now here's the odd part.
I searched YLW to YQY but to include airports within 225 miles (or KM whichever it lists). I thought maybe it'll be cheaper to fly into one airport but out another.
Not only was it not cheaper, it was all around more expensive.
So why would it be cheaper to search YLW to YHZ return, than to search YLW to a combination of YHZ/YQM/YQY? Shouldn't the previous price be included in the broader search?
What I mean is wouldn't that search look for
YLW to YQY & YQY to YLW
YLW to YQY & YHZ to YLW
YLW to YQY & YQM to YLW
YLW to YHZ & YQY to YLW
YLW to YHZ & YHZ to YLW
YLW to YHZ & YQM to YLW
YLW to YQM & YQY to YLW
YLW to YQM & YHZ to YLW
YLW to YQM & YQM to YLW
Shouldn't the YLW to YHZ return price have been the same?
Not a big deal, just odd that's all.

Hi Maritime,
I assume you are using ITASoftware to do this? If so, I have noticed the exact same problem/flaw when using the 'or any airport within X amount of miles'.
I emailed the ITASoftware developers about this, and they said that basically it comes down to the number of route combinations they can check at one time.
For instance, when you specify 'within 200 miles' from YQY, you're likely including a bunch of airports in that radius. So then ITASoftware uses some sort of algorithm to try and determine every combination of routes between all those airports (which can be quite a few). And then it must use some way of determining which of those route combinations to check during your query.
In short, I think it just ends up missing the 'best' combination. I've noticed the same thing as you. From my experience, anything over a '50 mile' radius is subject to inaccuracies.

Hey cmyden, I told a friend that I'd ask you to keep your eyes peeled for flights to Puerto Vallarta in January. I'm sure that you've already received a million other requests like this, but if you happen to see one, do you mind posting it?

Of course! If an unusually good price shows up for PVR I would of course love to post it. Usually I like a flight to be a good 25% off it's 'normal' price before I consider it a good deal.

yep, ITASoftware indeed.
Ok it's not just me then. Glad you're aware of the flaw. While I don't think there would be that many possibilities for YQY (I believe Saint John, and Fredericton are outside the radius) and maybe Charlottetown might be in there too, I'm surprised as I'd think that's relatively low. Whereas a New York or Los Angeles would have tons of airports, with countless flights.
Regardless, good to know to double check your avenues and not think the system will cross-reference for you.

Probably too early for any real deals to be had. Cheapest I can see right now is $590 USD on Alaska Airlines.

I don't suppose anybody knows what a reasonable price for a return trip Calgary-Nairobi would be? I'm looking at doing a trip in roughly October/November next year and I'm not sure if I should be trying to book as early as possible or if prices will likely improve in the coming months. Right now I'm seeing roughly $2000 on British Airways or KLM (and $10,000 on Lufthansa for economy class).
The big problem with the BA flights is that the Calgary->London flights all arrive a couple hours after the Nairobi flight leaves so I end up with a full day in London (which adds to the cost, but could work well if I can catch a football match that night).

I would say a decent price is around $1300-$1450 USD. I think it's probably too early for decent prices 1 year ahead. There are flights showing right now for $1350 during Jan/Feb/Mar.
As far as I know, peak season for Nairobi is Jan/Feb and June-September. October-December is one of the wet seasons, so I wouldn't expect prices to be at a premium.
Don't forget about the Emirates airline as well.
