So I've come across several links that seem to indicate the BB Storm 2 will be released to Telus on Nov 24ish. Same links show it running CDMA with EVDO support instead of the HSPA+ much to the dissapointment of some.
Can someone tell me what that means to the average user?

Im not any kind of expert by any means but I think that means its running on their older network (older technology, slower speed) as opposed to the HSPA network which is the 3G network. I think. The iPhone is running on their newer network and its 3G. I think it just means a slower wireless data speed.

I think the biggest thing it means is unless Telus has changed their ways, there will be no WiFi on it so they can nickle and dime you as much as possible.
That's the one thing I really hated about CDMA.
Other than that, speeds are probably comparable, you just won't get a SIM card that you can move from phone to phone as you upgrade your hardware.

The big thing I'm looking at is the coverage map. Looks pretty good in Alberta and BC, but other than the city of Winnipeg nothing in Manitoba or Saskatchewan.
I'd hate to be on the highway without cell coverage.

This is what I am wondering, I was told that you can't unlock any phone as it has to be HSPA capable. Can anyone else shed some light on this?

Yeah you can't use just any phone, it would have to be a GSM phone since I would assume they haven't changed their CDMA side of their network at all.
A good portion of GSM phones can be unlocked, and lots of HSPA+ phones are sold in an unlocked state.
On Rogers they don't care so you can buy a SIM card and put it in your dishwasher if it had a SIM card slot as long as you pay your bill.
Telus/Bell have been used to having a death grip on what handsets are on their network, so I'm curious if you can just get any unlocked phone and use it.

Just called Telus and they said that they'll let any unlocked phone on their network, though they ask for the serial number first to "confirm compatibility".
He didn't know if they use that serial number to put into their system to "whitelist" that phone.
So I still don't really know the answer.

As long as the phone is compatible with the telus network, you can use it with a Telus SIM card.
I'm not 100% clear on all of the concepts, but there are different frequencies within HSPA and GSM.
For starters, they are two different technologies that are not 100% compatible with each other, and have different frequencies/bands.
As long as the unlocked phone you are looking at purchasing uses the correct band(s) that the new Telus network supports, you can purchase a Telus SIM and use it with that phone.
Hope that makes sense. You can always look towards Howard Forms for more detailed info.

I was in the Telus Store today asking about the Storm 2. Both reps were very insistent that it will be the CDMA version only.

Storm 2 is now up on the Telus website, it is indeed CDMA but it shows it having WIFI.

Yet the CRTC has to protect them from the bad, evil foreign companies because they can't compete with them... 
My biggest issue with that is if a company like Verizon comes into Canada, they are not going to run it at a loss, so if they can make a $80 all-in plan profitable, then all the power to them!
CRTC needs to go.

I would personally go with Fido. No SAF or 911 fee anymore. Billed by the second and the 7pm evenings is decent. The iPhone 3G and 3GS doesn't change the plans or anything. The 3GS is just a slight upgrade on the 3G.
Now if you have travel out in the boonies frequently, Telus/Bell might be the better option.
