Default Cheapest place to buy digital SLR camera in Calgary?

Looking at doing some Christmas shopping when I arrive in Calgary next month as it will be cheaper than the UK.

I know the camera I want to get (Canon Rebel XSi) and I know I can get it at Futureshop.

Just wondering what other shops might have it even cheaper?

(I checked Costco online but the website oddly doesn't give the price without throwing in a colour printer that I don't want).

Check out these two places - I have found The Camera Store to have the best prices for most things. Vistek sometimes has specials, so they are on the list...

The Camera Store (www.thecamerastore.com)
Vistek (www.vistek.ca)

x2 for The Camera Store. On top of good prices the people who work there are INCREDIBLE. Some extremely knowledgeable people and I like to support them whenever I can.

I see it is ~$800 CAD at Futureshop

a Nextag search shows some american online retailers have it for as little as $550 USD. Might be better to get it shipped from the US if shipping and duty are not excessive

They are duty free, but there can be issues getting warranty on US bought cameras.

You really can't go wrong with the Camera Store. The camera I want (7D) is on sale at Vistek but I'm hesitant to get it there because they've always given me lousy service.

Memory Express has decent prices on cameras, and they price match, but I haven't bought camera gear there so I don't know about their knowlege or service.

Do you have a Canadian mailing address, if so go through Amazon, US retailer etc.

Does the Camerastore price match?

To answer the OP, would you consider a second hand camera? I'd assume with all the newly announced cameras (like the 7D), some people might be off loading their XSi.

You could do what I just did too. I price compared on the internet to buy a camcorder. Found that the Camera Store had the best price in Canada online. I then went to Best Buy and price matched the camera. Best Buy's price match is ridiculous, they match the price and then beat it by 10% of the lowered price. In my case, the camera was $599 at Camera Store and $629 at Best Buy. They matched the $599.00 and then took off another $60, so I ended up paying only $540.

I love the Camera Store, but if I'd walked in there, there's no way I would have haggled 10% off that camcorder, so I was happy with my price match bargoon.

Since Canon doesn't sell different models of Cameras to different retailers like other products/manufacturers, this may work out pretty sweet if Camera Store is even a little lower than Best Buy on the camera you want. It was no big deal either, I just told the sales person about the lower price on the Camera Store site, she called them to confirm it was a legit price and not some sort of internet only special (apparently that makes a difference somehow, although I might have disputed it).

I don't believe a Camera can have warranty in both with Canon. It's a grey area with Canon, as I believe there are two kinds... one for the intended market and one international variety. It's the international variety that is hard to get warrantied.

Re: the warranty.

This camera won't be used much in Canada, it will primarily be used overseas. Would the warranty not cover overseas? If so, if there was a problem could I theoretically send it to my parents in Canada to make a warranty claim?

If you want to order on-line or just have place to use to price match. Try Mostlydigital.

They have the XSi kit for $695, plus you can get shipping starting at $20.

Or you could walk into BestBuy and get it for 679.99 and not have to pay shipping.

(BTW, not a BestBuy fanboy, they just seem to have a good deal on a kit right now!)

That is correct, so long as the camera is sent to Canon's Canadian depot for warranty repair they will handle. People travel with their cameras all the time so long as the camera is sent to the country its warranty is in for repair they will treat it as a warranty repair.

Hmm I see that now, looks like they have two prices on there web site for the same kit ($679 and $729). Wonder what the difference between the two kits are, maybe just model year? Or maybe you get the $50 discount since comes in a box with Avril Lavigne on it!

i just wanted to give the camera store another mention. i bought my gf a new dslr about 6 weeks ago, and with the purchase, we signed up for a free beginner dslr course they offered. it was taught by one of tcs managers, who also teaches at sait. we walked out of that 3hr class today with a much better understanding of how to get the most out of our camera. sure, you might be able to save a few bucks online or price matching, but the extras we got thru tcs confirms i purchased the camera from the right store.
