Germany and Hannover 96 goalkeeper Robert Enke has died after being hit by a train in an apparent suicide, police have confirmed.
Enke, 32, was fatally injured at a level crossing northwest of Hannover.
The German football federation (DFB) said in a statement: "The German team has learned of the death of Robert Enke with great shock.
Germany coach Joachim Loew and manager Oliver Bierhoff added: "We are all shocked, we are speechless."
Enke's daughter Lara died in 2006 of a rare heart condition when she was just two. He leaves behind his wife, Teresa, and an eight-month-old daughter the couple had adopted in May.
German police released a statement saying: "The victim is apparently national team goalkeeper Robert Enke from Hannover 96. The first police indications are that it was a suicide."

Hey! My great-grandfather was Irish. Too bad he was from Northern Ireland, and they've been elminated.

Egypt score in the last minute to win 2-0 and force a playoff between them and Algeria in the Sudan on Wednesday..
Just learned from the BBC that Malawi's national team's nickname is "The Flames".

Bad luck for Ireland on Anelka's deflected shot, they'll be in tough now in France to get at least a goal but here's hoping they can do it.

Portugal got very lucky yesterday. They were the better team, but the main talking point will be Bosnia hitting the bar, then hitting post within 5 second in the 89th minutes.
Portugal will be in tough in Bosnia, but if they can get a goal, they will be just fine.
If they do get in, I can't see them making any kind of run like 2004 and 2006, there's just something missing. There's no real character to this team.

What a disgrace, a blatant offside and then an absolutely unforgivable missed handball. Pathetic.

You know that they're totally screwed once they take on a team from any nation that isn't hyphenated.
I am a hater, and I do feel screwed. I'd rather Sweden participate than Portugal.

It was an offside and a double handball! That is the equivalent of winning a conference final game in the last minute of the third in hockey with a blatant offside, a hand pass in the offensive zone and clear kick in off the puck for the winner - all on the same play. I'm not even a fan of Ireland but that was disgraceful.
People complain about refs in hockey but this was beyond comparison. I will take NHL refs any day of the week.

And they weren't even close. How the hell can a linesman miss an offside on a free kick?
As for the handball?
In fairness though the ref missed a French penalty a few minutes earlier when Given caught Anelka's ankle.

I can't believe that "goal" France scored, what a brutal call. Heartbreaker.. I'll enjoy watching France get their asses kicked in June.

Not a chance that was a penalty, unless that sniper that dropped Anelka was Irish.

From the replays I've seen it was as clear a penalty as you can get.
Given "clearly" catches Anelka's ankle with his hand.

I'd love for England to draw Portugal in the group stage and just destroy them.

I'd love that too. Portugal is going to create a group of death as they're going to come in as a low seed, so there will be 2 higher seeded teams, a lower seeded team and Portugal. It'll be interesting, but they had better get their act together or they're going to get slaughtered. Squeaking out a couple of narrow wins against Bosnia doesnt really inspire tons of confidence.
Portugal was nothing short of pathetically dismal this whole qualifying campaign, they got incredibly fortunate to even qualify. I dont think their supporters will even pretend to have confidence in that squad.
