I know there where a few threads in the past on this, but I never had a problem before. Is there a freeware spyware scanner and remover out there?

Also, how do I look in my registry files, where are they located?

I use Adaware and Spybot. What one misses, the other seems to catch.

http://www.lavasoft.de/ (for Adaware)
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html (for Spybot)

I agree adaware and spybot are great at stopping spyware. I've hada couple problems and it fixed it just like that.

Then add WinPatrol (you'll have to google it to get the address, sorry) - it searches for programs at start up, which is when spyware kicks in. You can turn off any program and kill any program attempting to latch itself onto your start-up sequence.

Best to do this after killing everything else, though. So it's the last step.

If it's the Cool Web Search you'll need the CW Shredder (google that too). Too lazy to dig around for the address.

Thanks a bunch, I'll give them a shot. Do you have any info on where the registry files are?

Hit run on your start menu and type in "regedit".

Don't do anything without incredibly specific instructions, though, as too much messing around in there can make your machine worse off...

Check out Registry First Aid. I use the free version, which can be a pain, but once I have cleaned everything up, regular use keeps my registry clean.
