Great deal on a new 50" plasma tv - $999.00
Now normally I don't post stuff like this but when I saw the price I thought I would alert my fellow CP members (just in case someone is looking for a new tv).
Leons has a sale on right now (I don't work for Leons by the way) on a 50" Samsung plasma tv for $999.00. Regular price is $1499.00.
Sale lasts till Sunday November 22.

The only negative thing I can see is that it only has 720 horizontal lines of resolution.
EDIT: Bestbuy has a better deal....

At that size, I would definitely not get 720. Actually, I probably wouldnt get 720 period unless your tv is tiny....why bother switching to HD if you're not getting the real deal?

If you mostly use your tv to watch off the air programs (cable) the best resolution that cable provides is 720p.... therefore the person with a 1080p tv doesn't have any clearer picture than the guy with the 720p set.
By the way, if the 720p resolution is a deal breaker for you, Leons is selling a 50" Samsung plasma with 1920 x 1080 horizontal lines of resolution for $1499.00
Regular price is $1999.00

A lot of my HD channels broadcast in 1080i...and I assume most of those 720's will eventually upgrade too. I do think having 1080p for your Blurays, Playstations etc is worth it, especially if you plan to keep the tv around for 5-10 years. If the TV was under 32" I would say 720 is fine....otherwise why bother buying a tv technology that's getting old just to save a couple hundred bucks?

No real reason to buy a 720P tv right now, 1080ps are dropping in price, and should be really affordable hit December/ early January.

also depends on viewing distance and not just size. Basically at 50" anything further than 10 feet there isnt any benefit to 1080p vs 720p

I have had the 1080/720 argument a million times, and as someone that has both, I can honestly say there is little if no difference in viewing quality. I have two 50" Samsung LCD TV's a year apart, and have Blu-Ray on both, and unless you are inside of 5 feet, there is no difference in quality. In fact for some reason, my XBox 360 looks better on the 720 set. If I was dumping the money, I would save the 500 bucks and just a 720. Until Broadcasters start sending signals at 1080 or unless you are hooking up your computer to the TV you will not be able to tell the difference unless you have 200/20 superhuman cyborg vision.

I agree with pylon, other features will improve picture quality MUCH more. Like black levels, that has such a huge impact on picture quality.

I use a 42" 1080p as my computer monitor sitting like 3 feet away. I am very glad I spent the extra money on the 1080p.
Just to add, there is a predicted price war coming up on smaller flat screens (32-37" range) and larger plasmas. The article is American, but I'm sure there are a lot of parallels to the Canadian market.
