CP Poker League - Next Event Fri. September 24th
Just a random thought that occured to me... I notice there are quite a few people who play poker on here, and I am wondering if there would be interest in organizing a poker league or some such? Bi-weekly, monthly or whatever your spouse allows. Personally, I would favour tournament over cash, and depending on buy-in/interest, perhaps send the top winner to WSOP every year... Any thoughts, interest?

Online or house game? I'd be down if it was at a house

Yeah, I'd be interested in a live game, depending on the stakes. Tournaments are indeed better--I've been running a home-game tournament for years now. They're good for experienced players, while still protecting less experienced players from losing their shirts.

I would be interested for sure. I know we have tried doing online tourneys before and there didn't seem to be the commitment or interest to keep them going for long. It might be a different story for a live game.
I actually run another poker leagure where we send the winner to the WSOP every year and it's a blast. Vegas during the WSOP is amazing if you are a big poker fan.
I have been fortunate enough to win the last 2 years and played in a couple events down there. Last year I played with Maria Ho who was on the Amazing Race this season, Nelly (the rapper) was at a table beside me, Chris Ferguson was across from me, Devil fish was at a table right by me, and tons of other guys. It is really a cool experience if you are a poker fan to be able to see all these guys in person and potentially play with them.
The WSOP has a $1000 buy in event and lots of $1500 events as well so we could make the league somewhat affordable, unless we want to send a guy the the Main Event.

I would be very into something like this. I used to play in Poker Rodeo, a league here in town (that played at the casinos) but since folding up have not seen many games outside of the odd house one here and there

Just to clarify, live of course - much more fun. For those that have experience with these, how many people could we accomodate? I really have not put any thought into logistics, but if we are doing this at people's houses or boardrooms, the space would be limited. I would like to hear some ideas people have as to space, buy-in, etc.

Part of the logistics depends on equipment, part on space. I have a table-top and set of 500 relatively decent chips that we could use, but one set is only enough for around 8 players.
I think multi-table tournaments are really fun--but they require access to more than one table and probably more than one set of chips. I have an excel spreadsheet that allows easy calculations for combining chip sets, calculating starting stacks, etc.
If someone has a house with two tables and lots of chairs--like a dining-room and a kitchen or some such thing--then we could probably accommodate 16 players. Recognizing of course that poker night tends to have a high rate of last-minute bailouts--so if you invite 20 for any given night, you might get 12-15 anyway.

I have played in tournaments as small as 12, all the way up to ~60.
Depending on the interest here I'm sure we could combined to get a good location. For small games I would be happy to use my condo ~ 8-10 people. For larger we would need a bigger space. I find a good buy-in is somewhere in the neighbourhood of 65$ for monthly games and then maybe a 200+ once a year for entry into a bigger event. (Stampede tourny, Vegas etc)

Also, we could use a leader board point system for the reg players (Say 3-5 bucks a buy-in) that could be used to send say the top 3 players for the year to a Flames game!

I am sure I could organize 2 tables at my house, given appropriate notice. Just to clarify, do you have a chipset with denominations or just the standard green-red-blue-black one? I have one of those too. How is everyone else situated space-wise?
Or, does any one know of or have access to a suitable venue through work or friends?

I was actually thinking of this rake for a WSOP package to the overall tournament leaderboard winner.

Not really on topic but are you planning on playing in the Flames Poker tourny this year? what's the usual buy in and when abouts do you think they will be having it so I can keep my eyes open for it.
Back on topic - it's to bad I don't live in Calgary otherwise I would be in for sure

My chipset is just white-red-blue-green-black. Do you have a felt table top as well?
My condo is really small--so that's sort of out. Is the idea to limit this to CPers? I know 2 or 3 people who might be interested otherwise.
Before we get too far, we should talk about stakes. I'm technically still a student--so I may drop out or at least only come every other time if the buy-in is too high. I was actually thinking 40 bucks might be okay as a buy-in--65 is on the steep side for me. Not sure how that would work out for the WSOP idea--depends how many we get, I guess.

Yeah, I have one of those Costco folding felt-tops thanks to my ex-in-laws, but it's not very large. Ideally, I am looking for someone to speak up on here that owns a hall or has a access to a large board-room. I can provide a small boardroom, but that would only accomodate a maximum of 10 people. Thinking back to my UofC days, the Elbow Room would be ideal, but I am not sure if you can just take it over on a Friday or Saturday night.

There are numerous places at the U of C that would easily accommodate a poker game. I'm just not sure if it would be kosher for CP to use the U to play poker. That and no one could drink.

Elbow Room was licensed and served alcohol after 4 pm, but I haven't been there since 1992...
What, does nobody here own a 7500 sq. ft. house with a dedicated games area? I can offer my house once in a while, but I don't see Mrs Impaler tolerating this every 2 wks or even every month... Personally, I would love to see 15-20 people involved on a regular basis.
Buy-in wise, we need to do some crunching. For example, if we make it $100, with $90 for the prize pool and $10 for the WSOP rake, that's $1350 prize money, and $150 for WSOP prize every session if we get 15 people. If you play every month, that's only $1800 for WSOP every year - not quite enough IMHO, though I suppose it would buy airfare, hotel, and a buy-in into the $1K NL. If we play every 2 wks, obviously, that generates $3600 for WSOP - much nicer. If we make the buy-in $50 halve everything. Raking 25% @ $100 changes the numbers to: $4500 playing monthly and $9000 playing by-weekly; at $50 - $2250 and $4500. That seems pretty good actually... Sorry for stream of consciousness...

I am so in!!!!!
Why wouldnt we just rent a hall once or twice a month, that would give us all the space we need and work
the rental into the buy in price.
