Webcam Video Chat Client
Need some advice/reviews.
I will soon be setting up my place for video chat, as my gf has gone off for school, and we wanted to finally join the "new age".
Question is, what is the best video client? Skype? Gmail? Yahoo? MSN?

Best? I think one that matches what you already use.. if you already have MSN with friends on that, use MSN, if you have everyone you know on Skype, use that.

My friend in Spain always uses Skype. When we used Webcams over msn, it worked well, well the video did, we didn't use audio.

I lived in Japan last year and used Skype to call home and also to talk with a buddy living in Tanzania. It worked very well with few problems, and in those cases all that was needed was to end the conversation and call back. Another nice thing with Skype was the ability to call phones from a computer (I don't know if other services have this), so my girlfriend was able to call her parents who have trouble with computers.
I recommend Skype because it did everything that I needed it for, and worked well.

I've been messing around with Skype for a year or so now. Seems to work well. Used it to call my g/f on her laptop when she was in Calgary and I was on Vancouver Island. Also used it to contact my brother on his laptop when I was on Holiday in Playa del Carmen. Both times it worked really well, was particularily impressed with the call from Playa as the sound and picture were just like it is at home.
Seems like a good program. You get charged a small amount for using it to call and land line, no idea how much that is though.

Skype is the way to go for this cowboy. Fiance moved to South Africa for 3 months, and have used it numerous times with no lag or interference at all. Very simple to use and pretty happy with the experience thus far.

Ok...so if I have skype app on my iphone, I will be able to talk to anyone anywhere for free, so long as they have skype (pc or land line) correct? No catches?

For calls to landlines, you generally have to pay.

Awesome. Actually got the app and downloaded it to home pc last night. Works good. If it works half as good from Mexico, I'd be very pleased.

Yes. I did this from Hawaii and it worked like a charm. I paid $2 a month for unlimited calling to any landline in north america (so you aren't just limited to calling a computer). Just make sure you do it on a wifi connection! I wouldn't want to know what would happen to your data bill when you got back.
The tip somebody here gave me when I went away: Put your phone into airplane mode and then activate wifi. Airplane mode by default will turn everything off, but you can reactivate wifi and it will stay in airplane mode so you can't even accidentally connect to a cell network.
