The Legion is becoming overzealous.

Well, I'm not going to be buying a poppy this year.
Furthermore, I'm in the process of copyrighting roses, maple leaves, maple trees, daffodils, tulips, grass, dandelions, lilacs, fir trees, pine cones, apples, carrots, potatoes, the letter 't', the number 4 and the moon.

You would think the poppy would be public domain. It is a shame that the legion is doing this. Rules are rules? Give me a break.

What's the legion's stance on poppy seed bagels? I want to head down to the bakery and pick up a snack this afternoon but I don't want to get their lawyers after me.

No sir, that isn't a poppy... it's a red... begonia... yeah, that's it. You can't stop me from making begonia-shaped cookies!!!

Begonia; looks a little like a poppy!

why is this such a big deal? Someone trying to profit off a cause? They are selling poppy cookies at Remembrance Day. Profits are not going to the poppy fund. I think its fine that they said its a copyright and to remove the product. Poppy fund is for a very good cause, and for someone to misinform people that the poppy cookie they are buying is not supporting the fund is fraud. Its not going to hurt the business but it can take from the poppy fund.

Imagine even the suggestion that a Cobourg bakery, fulfilling the order of some poppy cookies for the family of a fallen Canadian soldier from the Afghanistan conflict, would be breaking the copyright rules for the poppy?

It was for the family of a fallen Soldier. How is this taking from the poppy fund ??
From my understanding they were not selling them for profit.

Not allowing it to be used on pins, I can understand, because those could conceivably take money away from the legion when people buy the pins to use rather than the poppy, and assume that they're supporting the legion by buying and wearing the pin.
But the cookies make no sense. It's not like buying a poppyseed-shaped cookie is going to make me less likely to buy a poppy from a veteran. The legion needs to be careful that they don't litigate away the poppy's status as a treasured national symbol.

There was a case a few years ago where the Legion sent a Cease and Desist to someone who was selling a hat they called a poppy hat. It was red and vaguely resembled a poppy but there was no connection to Remembrance day.
If someone is trying to use the same symbol and the same cause for profit I can see going after them. But the Legion is going too far. I support the legion, my grandfather was wounded in WWI, I have relatives who served, and a university roommate of mine is in Afghanistan right now. But things like this I strongly disagree with.

Quoted for sheer humor factor.
By the way, I already have the copyright on potatoes, and some other idiot company seems to think they own the moon.

I'm with you. As benign and innocent as those two examples appear to be, I can understand the Legions need to crack down on anyone trying piggy back on the symbolism associated with the poppy, for any reason. The poppy has lost enough of it's symbolic importance with many people today, could you imagine if we had 100 charities using it?

But why does the Legion get exclusive rights to use the poppy as a symbol?
My grandfather served in WWII- and I wear my poppy to honour him and the sacrifices he made. (also to honour our other troups; past and current.) He also detested the Legion- he had stopped going by the early 50's because "it was full of guys who never saw action in the war, but go on to tell stories about how hard the war was."
The poppy symbolizes the efforts of our soldiers; and this is how it is being used in this story. Just because the Legion found a way to use this symbol as a fund raiser doesn't mean they own it.

The poppy fund money collected goes to assisting veterans. I dont see why anyone should profit off a symbol used for charity. Furthermore, to use this as a justification for not buying a poppy this year is petty.

So this idiot actually believes that people buying poppy shaped cookies will distract people from buying actual poppy pins? HA!
I have a poppy in my visor 365 days a year and I always get a few more when I see them around the malls. I will be stopping that from now on. If anything those cookies and pins bring more awareness to their cause.
I'll save my $20+ a year I usually give to them and donate it to a food bank instead.

The pins that the Legion wouldn't allow to be sold were being used to raise money for veterans. The cookies were baked for and at the request of the family of a veteran. Its not like this is some huge profit driven company trying to keep the money for themselves and trying to deprive veterans...
Even if it was some big profit making scheme, the fact remains that you shouldn't be able to copyright a flower and prevent anyone from using the word poppy or anything that looks remotely like a poppy.

Mods I request this post be deleted as he has used the word p***y without proper paper work from the legion saying he can do so.
