Was he healthy, or did he just think he was healthy? A lot of people (like myself) have not had physical check ups in years. Was he over weight, did he have poor diet or was he a heavy smoker?

I realize you said that he was a relative of a co-worker, so I wouldn't expect you to know all that... just saying.

I wonder what precautions (besides taking a vaccine) are people taking to minimize their risk. Personally, I take a break from the gym during flu season, as well, this year I didn't go to any Halloween parties and I skipped restaurants lately.

You are right I don't know the answers to those questions, I realize there are a lot of things that could factor in, but "healthy" was the word they used, definitely could mean different things to different people.

This one gets into it:

http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2...41546-sun.html

Three people in the London region have died from H1N1, including a two-month-old boy -- the first infant in Ontario to succumb to the virus.

The two others were a man and woman in their 70s, an age group not considered high-risk for the virus. Both had underlying medical conditions.

"The baby was healthy prior to becoming infected," said Dr. Graham Pollett, the health unit's medical officer of health.

The two adults who died had multiple underlying medical conditions. One was already in hospital and the other was admitted because of flu-like symptoms, Pollett said.

You can bet there were underlying conditions and they were likely older. Otherwise the report would have been that 4 previously healthy people with no high-risk factors died.

Don't forget that even had H1N1 not burst onto the scene, people would be dying from seasonal flu instead - we just wouldn't be hearing about it. People dying from the flu is nothing new - up to 8,000 Canadians die every year from it.
I know that it's been mentioned numerous times in this thread, but it's actually the morbidity, stress on the health care system and economic cost of people missing work that is the biggest concern. If, as estimated, 30% of the population become ill, the cost will be very significant, if not bordering on catastrophic. It costs huge amounts of money to keep people alive, have them seen in hospital/ICUs, etc.

There's a way you could continue your normal life and not be so cautious, It's called a flu-shot

Thats why the gym has been so quiet lately. Maybe others are thinking this way also. I saw a lady yesterday literally scrubbing down the machines before her 30 second set. I wonder if we will start to see those wearing masks hit the gym in the weeks to come. I think if you wait for a germ free gym you won't ever work out. Maybe ocd will spread though.

I've been using my home gym until my immunity builds up from my flu-shot last week. 3 more days to go!

My wife just finished getting the shot for our daughter at the Oval and there was NO wait and she counted 18 nurse stations that were empty.

Pretty much what I figured to be the case all along. So I guess to answer the original question this thread posed, no, as of now I will not be getting an H1N1 shot.

Except wasn't in predicted that Alberta would have 400 deaths alone from H1N1?

This "nothing more than a flu" knocked out half my office. My boss wanted me to e-mail him all the people that were out sick each day. I e-mailed him back saying it would be far quicker for me to list who was IN. In other words, we didn't get much work done this week... while I was there to address any emergencies, I certainly wasn't at my best. Still felt extremely tired today so I'm glad the weekend is here and I can hopefully sleep the rest of this thing off. But if my office was decimated, I can imagine it's similar right across the country. "Nothing more than a flu" is causing havoc in many workplaces.

Problem is it is highly contagious, much more then seasonal flu, but the degree to which most people are going to be sick, isnt much different then seasonal flu. in fact some reports such most people will have milder symptoms than seasonal flu

That is what people do not get. It is no deadlier than the seasonal flu, but the potential to exhaust our health-care system and hurt they fragile economy is great. Get Vaccinated to help the economy should be the slogan.

Yeah good luck fotze. And congrats on the new one.

If it means anything to your wife, I heard confirmation today that the vaccine takes 10-14 days to be completely effective in ones body anyways. Not much you guys could have done differently really.

Edit- BTW, I would be interested to see the results of a new poll on CP with the same questions. I know that my answer of "no, any other reason" would probably be chanced to "yes, but not right away".
