It's not the deaths that are a concern to most people, its the stress on the health care system its taking because of people needing special attention. The more people in the hospital for H1N1 the less doctors there are available for people with other illnesses. Thats the sole reason I can think of why they want most people to get the shots. Cost saving and possibly life saving for people who contract other illnesses.

Police and firefighters still waiting for vaccine

Quote:
The day before the province is rolling out its second attempt at mass H1N1 vaccination clinics, Calgary police and firefighters still don't know when they'll get their shots.

Mayor Dave Bronconiier says the city has the resources to administer the vaccine but Alberta Health Services (AHS) won't release any yet.

Bronconnier says the absentee rate for frontline city staff is double the norm and he doesn't want to see the situation get much worse. "When you are trying to serve the population in the best way possible we need to make sure we have our frontline staff healthy," says Bronconnier.

The city has 16,000 employees and the deputy chief of Calgary Emergency Management Agency is asking the province for 4,000 doses of H1N1 vaccine.

Tom Sampson says those doses would be used to vaccinate firefighters, police officers, 911 staff and some water and utility employees.

Sampson says the city is prepared to provide the nurses, doctors and healthcare workers to give those vaccinations to priority city workers. "We have nurses on standby, we also have a number of paramedic firefighters who still are qualified [to give the vaccine] and are prepared to join us in that bid to give others the vaccine," says Sampson.

My wife is pregnant and trying to get the vaccine. I found this article when trying to understand why she was considered a high risk and what those risks meant for the baby.

It's an interesting read.

He took a nasal swab and said we should get the results next week. He said he should have been kept home 5 days after the onset of symptoms.

He gave me an Rx for Tamiflu if I develop symptoms. He had the vaccine but he is only vaccinating high risk groups right now.

He told me to bring my son back in 6 weeks or so and he will vaccinate him then.
This might have been answered in this thread already, but if your doctor is 95% sure your son had H1N1, then why would he need to get vaccinated for it again (assuming the swab comes back positive)? Does your son not have immunity to the virus now?

Apparently not, since the doctor seems certain the swab will come back positive, but I'm going to talk to him about it again beforehand.

If contracting the virus doesn't mean the individual is now immune, then that would mean a vaccination is pointless. The whole point of a vaccination is to expose people to the virus, but in a form that won't result in getting sick (since the virus is dead). Your son won't need a vaccination to H1N1 if he already had it.

If he did have it, you should call the paper and let them know. They don't seem to be reporting both sides of the story. As terrible as the few deaths have been, your son's face as someone who recovered without incident, is more the face of the virus than anyone else.

On another note, I was listening to the radio today and was impressed to hear a story denouncing the hysteria. Basically said that by the media only reporting the deaths (without infection or survival rates) and by focusing more closely on the young people who have died, that H1N1 has "jumped the shark".

My kids just finished getting their shot. Got to the Stampede grounds at 9:15am and got the shot at 10am. Lines moves fast and things are organized here. I heard the Whitehorn station is insane. We live in the NE and glad we drove down here instead.

EDIT: Heard the oval isn't too busy either.

I really wish when they reported deaths of this virus they would give more information about the the medical history of these people.

But it's not as scary to the public if you know they're all 80 year olds with emphysema - and that the seasonal flu likely would have resulted in their death.

You can bet there were underlying conditions and they were likely older. Otherwise the report would have been that 4 previously healthy people with no high-risk factors died.

Don't forget that even had H1N1 not burst onto the scene, people would be dying from seasonal flu instead - we just wouldn't be hearing about it. People dying from the flu is nothing new - up to 8,000 Canadians die every year from it.

A relative of someone I work with just passed away last weekend. He was 55 and healthy, went to Vegas and got sick as soon as he got home, ended up hospitalized as it developed into pneumonia and 2 weeks later he died and it was determined to be H1N1 as the cause of death.

Yup, but if the deaths were to average, healthy people, then there would be widespread panic if they announced that. So it's in the Health Authority's best interests to control the reactions by not letting them be shaped by sudden developments (something they've been atrocious about thus far). People should be neither alarmed nor complacent, regardless of who these latest victims were.
