Prostitution For Protection - A Fiddler Crab Phenomenon
Crabs trade sex for protection
Quote:
Female fiddler crabs mate with their neighbours in exchange for protection.
|
Quote:
The discovery of the sex-for-security trait helps to explain a surprising quirk: how it is that females defend their territory just as successfully as males despite their smaller claws. It is also the first known case of male and female neighbours teaming up to defend territory in any species, according to lead researcher Richard Milner of the Australian National University in Canberra.
|
Additionally, apparently prostitution isn't unique to Fiddler Crabs, however:
Quote:
Females of other species trade sex for material benefits. Red-winged blackbirds do so for the right to forage on a male's territory, and Adelie penguins exchange sex for stones to build their nests.

I hear that this sort of thing happens among humans sometimes too.

Just watch. Their lifestyle choices will catch up with them. God does not approve of this behaviour, and they will get more than a minor case of crabs on judgement day.

I'm not really sure how this constitutes prostitution.
Seriously, they mate and then the males help protect them? That doesn't really sound like prostitution to me, it sounds more like, you know, normal mating behavior.
Penguins help build a nest after they mate with a female? Wow, imagine that, a male actually wanting a nest for what presumably would be his offspring.

I just don't get how this is something new?
The female chooses its mate based on their fitness (ability to protect her) and he defends his territory which consists of neighbouring females from males trying to invade it? Obviously he wants a territory full of females for reproductive purposes.

The word prostitution is being used here to describe when an individual uses sex to get something in return when it has nothing to do with procreation.

I'm totally serious when I say that science does not understand the human experience. What is the point of such a study?

I would think the point of the study is the same with all studies. It is an attempt to analyze animal behaviour, it is about studying the world around us. My little joke was just to point out that animals are not so far away from humans as people like my religious parents would like to believe.
You cannot criticize researchers for studying animal behaviour, that is what science is all about.

Amazing!...Gold diggers do the exact same thing for stones, protection, and the right to forage in male territory as well.

At this point I can neither confirm, nor deny, the existence of a cluster of females living around me for protection.
