Have you driven a Ford lately?

When I finally bought my car, it was between a new Corolla and a new Fusion (both $29K and loaded, the Toyota being full) Now, I was leaning to the Fusion for the extra room and the fact it looks nicer and handles better, but i selected the Corolla--why? well, my insurance was an honest 50% lower with the Corolla.

But I really liked that Fusion, the ambient lighting and Sync were just sweet.

Having test driven way too many vehicles the past three years, I have to say that in terms of fit and finish, the Japanese have fallen greatly, Ford and GM have gotten much better and Korean cars still mostly suck. In terms of ride, Honda/Acura's gotten way too harsh, Toyotas are still way too soft, and Ford/Nissan's pretty good. Volkswagen's still Volkswagen, but their quality's really gone down.

29k for a Corolla??? Don't get me wrong, they are great cars, but that seems about 10-12k too much for that level of car.

Well, fully loaded XRS with extended warranty and tax and delivery brings it to $28 something.

Well that's a different class of car...I think you'd be hard pressed to find anybody who wouldn't take a BMW over a Ford lol.

I used to enjoy the General and his junk I grew up a Bowtie lover. Than I purchased an 04 F150. 190 000k on it so far with no issues. Compared to the Gms I owned in the past its cost me less money and doesnt have any odd rattle or squeak problems.

Yeah, you're not exactly comparing apples to apples there. Besides, that car is like $50K, people are talking about Fords that cost half that.

I drive a Ford and I love it. Actually, I have always owned Fords and have had very few problems with any of them.

I just wish they would bring the 2010 Focus RS to North America, I would LOVE to have one of these.

thats alot of money for either car, but at least your corolla will probably be worth ~$15k in 2 years, while the ford will be $10k.

who cares about the price, the cost of ownership is what matters, for which the purchase price is just one piece.

As long as Fords and other domestics lead the pack when it comes to unreliability and more importantly depreciation rates I'll never own one.

It's pretty easy to love BMW's over a Fords when you don't have to actually pay for it.

I could get to love an Aston Martin if I didn't have to pay for one.

It all depends on how long he plans to own the car.

The problem is that depreciation tends to affects more expensive versions of cars more so than basic/mid-level models. Options and upgrade packages matter much less on the used market, and that extra 10k he spent will be whittled down pretty fast when he wants to sell that car. It's sort of like having the most expensive house on the block....it will never be worth what you payed for it, because nobody with your budget is looking in that neighborhood.

But hey, if the loaded Corolla is what he wanted, and for him that is what makes him happy, who am I to judge. It's not what I wouldve bought with that money, but I can't really blame anyone for wanting such a reliable and solid car.

I would never buy a Ford new. However, the upside of the steep depreciation is that you can get a sweet deal on a 1-2 year old Ford. This option probably represents the lowest total lifecycle cost of ownership option as opposed to buying any other vehicle type either new or used.

I would never buy a Honda used. The asking prices on 1-2 year old Hondas is laughable, and when I purchased my current vehicle (a Honda) I calculated the cost of buying new was actually lower than used due to the low rate financing promotion that they were offering on new vehicles. That's not even factoring in the extra year of remaining warranty.

Yeah I've done the same research. A used Toyota minivan in Canada was more expensive than the new one with more options I bought in the States. Japanese vehicles tend to hold their value quite well, particularly when they're still fairly new.

I also own a Chrysler (still can't believe I do as I was raised in an anti-Chrysler houeshold lol). It's a model that some dude paid $55,000 for in 2005 that I paid $17,000 for in 2008 with 56,000 kms. The depreciation on domestics is insane...you should think long and hard before buying one new IMO. Used? That's a different story. You can find tremendous deals.

It truly amazes me that Chrysler can find people would would pay 55k for it's product. Anything over 25k and I would start getting nervous...
