No disrespect to anyone excited, but it looks really stupid to me. Not excited whatsoever by that preview. Different strokes I guess....

I had no idea what this was, or anything about it, but one of my buddies told me the new 3D JC came up with is mind blowing.

He basically said that rather than having the odd thing come out of the screen like conventional movies, that it's like you are actually IN the movie.

I for one can't wait to see this.

Looks really freaking corny.

Blue people on dragons fighting mechs. An anime lovers dream, a film critic's nightmare.

No amount of special effects will make a movie good. Remember that.

You are not. I thought Titanic was the worst 8 hours of my life. I was sort of relieved when I was informed that it only SEEMED like 8 hours.

Titanic was a steaming pile of a movie--practically unwatchable from beginning to end--the acting was terrible, the dialogue was appalling, the cinematography was overwrought and the soundtrack was migraine-inducing.

But James Cameron has a pretty impressive reverse-midas touch, I'll give him that. Everything he touches turns to crap.

On the other hand, I'm a sucker--so I probably will see Avatar in theaters and line his pockets just a little more.

Like I said in the other thread James has only written and directed 6 movies (basically) in his career.

Terminator, T2, Aliens, Abyss, True Lies and Titanic.

You are spot on. All five of those are pure craptacular, terrible movies. It isn't like any of them were the best movies in history in their genre and none of them heralded a new generation of movie making or were groundbreaking in any way.

Might as well have Michael Bay direct Avatar. At least then it would be entertaining.

I'll give you Terminator and T2.

True Lies was good for what it was.

Abyss, Aliens and Titanic.... meh

Especially Aliens. Cameron made an action-packed crowd pleasing sci-fi, great. However, Alien was more groundbreaking and influential than any of the movies that Cameron has made.

As I said in my lengthy post on the first page, I haven't been to any other 3D movies so couldn't really compare this to them - but my understanding now based on reading this is that there are generally only little bits and pieces of 3D movies that are actually in 3D. Avatar is ALL 3D... one of the scenes we were shown took place in a large room filled with tables - these jumped out of the screen; the big fight/chase sequence with a rain forest beast (several clips of this appear in the trailer) has the characters running through bamboo shafts - the camera appears to follow the action under trees and through narrow gaps. Some of it reminded me of those old View-Finder goggles you could buy with the circular cartridge carousels that would be "3D" - things appear in layers.

Wow, lots of anger for James Cameron hey? Did he force you to watch his movies? No.

I liked Titanic. Sure, the soundtrack is god awful, but the movie itself was wicked. DiCaprio is one of the best actors of our time.

The sequel sucks though man, I hated that they had replaced Vinnie Chase with Jake Gyllenhaal.

Jurassic Park begs to differ, in my opinion.

This trailer was attached to District 9, a film with a fraction of Avatar's budget and I dare say that District 9 had better looking CG and more realistic aliens that blended well!

Interesting to note that District 9's CG was supposed to be down by Peter Jackson's company but James Cameron basically kept them all busy with Avatar so instead a bunch of Vancouver companies did District 9.

This is an interesting comment.

I saw District 9. It was a great movie but I thought the CG was... not the best. Especially the aliens. I say this because they tended to avoid closeups and many of the shots of the aliens were panning shots from far away so you couldn't pick out issues in rendering. I will give them credit though, they did a lot with $30 million.

AVATAR, from what I have seen, has far superior CG... and from what I have heard of the 3D... it should be quite the experience. I am very interested in seeing AVATAR but even if the movie doesn't stand up, the technology will change the way movies are made in the future and I think that Cameron deserves credit for that.

Full-length Trailer

Featurette

Strangely enough, I think the featurette is the most compelling advertisement I have seen for AVATAR.

Well considering District 9 took place on Earth and this takes place on a fictional planet, I suppose I can see what you mean.
