Just think.....this is the way they treat their own people all the while building a massive modern army, navy and airforce. How would you fair if they had control of your country?

Well,
Britain's Industrial Revolution's industry pollution compared to modern pollution is vastly different. Nevermind, the scale of the pollution and environmental degradation in China. It could also be said that people really didn't understand the consequences of their action. An excuse that modern China cannot make. As well, as anyone who has spent even a short time in China could tell you....the leaders really don't care.

No it doesn't. It looks a lot like the Soviet Union in the 30's, maybe, or London in the 50's, but industrialization in the so-called "First World" was on far smaller scale over a long period of time.

China is doing some atrocious things, but we have a few places in Canada which wouldn't seem out of place in that collection unfortunately...a lot of them in our home province.

Edward Burtynsky (who has taken amazing landscapes of mines, shipbuilding yards, marble quarry's) has taken some amazing photos....these are from Sudbury.

Given our population vs. China's, and if you scale them evenly I would say we are not much better than China, if better at all.

China's pollution is just magnified by their billion person population, which is obviously quite a bit bigger than ours. Canada is horrible for pollution, we are among the worst in the world.

And I have always been a strong supporter of the "fix your own first" policy.

Right for CO2 emissions which covers air pollution, but there are many other aspects. I think that China has us beat in water, soil, noise, thermal and soil pollution per 1,000 people. It gets complicated if you really want to start breaking it down..

For example, Canada is among the highest in the world (15th I believe?) in water quality index scoring. BUT, Canada is among the worst in the world (among major countries and industry leading countries) for Water Consumption.

We manage our forest resources very well, but yet at the same time our forest cover is changing at a rapid rate. So as I said before, we are not much better than China, if a tall better, but I would in no way say we are worse than them even on a per 1,000 people scale. Don't get me wrong here, China is terrible and what they are doing to their environment is horrible and I totally appreciate what the original poster is trying to convey here.

It comes down to the fact that regardless of Canada's current environmental state, China is producing waste at a much higher level over all given their population and rate of growth. If they continue at their current pace they will not have a country left.

It sounds hypocritical to sit here while we pollute and waste water resources and say "Hey China, even though our pollution is comparable when broken down, you guys are on a much higher scale given your population, so... you know, stop that or else." But it does make sense in the long run, you can't let a country with that many people continue to pollute like this.

Well they have enough money to deal with it when they want. I dont plan on visiting (other than maybe hong kong) so honestly it doesnt affect me. Go ahead and pollute all you want China.

Just dont come asking me for money via some dodgy charity to clean up your water.

Canada is certainly no saint. There are some remote northern communities, most of them first nations communities, where people suffer poor health situations due to enviromental problems caused by industry, and where the people live in relative poverty. I know because I sometimes have to visit them for my job.

China is pretty bad, but the idea that Canada is some kind of environmental heaven is a myth.

During certain parts of our history they would fit in quite well. In terms of modern environmental standards, if everyone consumed as much as the average North American, we would need five planets. Well.. in a way it does. Air pollution affects all of us, and it especially affects those who are adjacent to China, like Japan. They call it "landscaping", which basically means that something goes up in the air in one country, then floats over to the neighbors and plasters, or "landscapes", itself on to their territory. There was a big problem with this in Europe in the past few decades.. and now I can't see any of China's neighbors being happy about this either.

And the overall atmosphere is greatly affected by harmful pollutants. Pollution does not follow political boundaries like man made laws, it goes where it wants.. and it always affects more than just the creator. Think of it as second hand smoke, we as the world are all harming each other with our second hand pollution, some a lot more than others.

The only people who think of Canada as an environmental heaven are uninformed Canadians. Everyone else in the world knows that as "America Jr." we consume at a ridiculous rate.

Honestly in my dealings with international committees regarding environmental studies, many Europeans paint us the same color as Americans when it comes to consumption and pollution. We are, in short, scoffed at for our degradation of the planet.
