Drinking before the game = pre-gaming
Drinking before the bar = pre-gaming
Drinking before a wedding = pre-gaming
Drinking before a funeral = pre-gaming

grew up in calgary, went to uni in onterrible. I have only ever herd it called pre-drink or pre-drinking

The term pre-drinking just makes me think of George Carlin and his "Pre-boarding" routine. You can't be pre-anything that you are currently doing.
