Consider getting liver or kidneys for your meat choice, very cheap and very high source of protein. Lentils, potatoes, and cabbage are also inexpensive, nutritious and versatile.

If I had a choice between eating quite well and eating a little not very nutritious food for a month, and all I had to do was peek into a trash can, damn right I'd be rolling up my sleeves.

Obviously its not 'Plan A' but... do what you gotta do. It never hurts to know your options.

True. I don't even see it as a bad idea really. It would definitely be a last resort for me though. I would just feel too bummish doing that.

I thought as of about 5 years ago it was any and all bodily fluids, not just blood, that you couldn't get paid for.

back in the day, when I was at the U of C HSC, the various department often had lunch hour seminars where they would provide free lunch and beverages for who ever attended. It was a way of encouraging students to attend. If there was a big name invited speaker, then they would even cater in some semi-gourmet lunches.

As a student, if you wanted to sit thru all those talks, you could have free lunch almost every day, and even store up the leftovers for dinner.

Same thing in hospitals when, for example, they have their grand rounds - food is always provided for med students, residents and medical staff. If you look like a student, no one would even blink at you being there.

We often attended medical conferences at resorts or major hotels where all meals were included. Technically, all you needed was a name badge to get in, but the serving staff don't give a damn, so even when I forgot my badge in the hotel or my briefcase, no one thought to ask if i should be there.

These situations always made me wonder, If I were ever in dire need of food, I'd seek out these lectures, meetings and conferences.

I don't completely disagree but as a Varsity football player, you've got to make some sacrifices. As a result I had to be one of the guys working security and it was usually pretty easy to extort $20 or whatever out of a few of the drunk idiots, and then getting to watch them make Ketchup soup was somewhat amusing.

What does Subway do with all of the leftover bread at the end of the day? You could see if you could go get some free bread.

From one poor ass student to another, knowing things like spices and sauces,

- grilled cheese sandwich and campbells tomato soup (~$1 for that meal)

-normal tomato sauce ($1 for a giant tub of tomato sauce with no taste) + oragano (for taste), ground beef, onions, celery, pasta for spegetti (~ $1 for that meal, you can make like 3 days worth from that)

- protein soy powder supplaments (mix with water, if you are low on protein)

- pork chops (cheapest of the meats, or so I find) marinate in: cheap orange juice (not the tropicana stuff, but the carton stuff) + vineger + brown sugar... then rice on the side

- bananas, always cheap and healthy

- yougart + bananas in blender, though yougart is a bit more expensive, Safeway usually has deals for it and its a great breakfast

- BLT's

- if you have a hot pot, chicken in a hot pot is always a great tasting option.

- if you want to buy another spice, chili + toast

- burritos (bit more expensive)

- milk (little more expensive, but I try to get as much protein and nutrients etc in me)

And of coarse, always free food around campus.

I don't touch instant noodles or kraft dinner or sidekicks with a ten foot pole

Get a proper rice cooker and the biggest bag of rice you can. You can survive off that for months just throw bits of vegetables and salted (yummy) meats into there and cook it all at once.

Also Beans.

What I would do in your situation:
1. Find a part time job. You should be able to double your food budget working one day a month (or a couple of shorter shifts).
2. Hit a food bank. That's why they are there.
3. Try to find low cost healthy options.

A lot of heathly low cost food options have already been mentioned. Some others are:
* High fibre cereals are a good breakfast. They tend to go on sale at Safeway about once a month.
* Check out auctions. They might not be convenient for you to attend, but if they are you can sometimes get smoking deals. (e.g. I've picked up Amy's 12-inch frozen pizzas for $1 each and a case of about 50 veggie burgers for $10)

Wow thanks guys for your responses.... I'll definately will try to hit Superstore this weekend, all depends on my roommate's mood.... Anyways, a reason why I do not want to be consuming KD or Instant noodles for a long period of time... lets just say from past experience I could not take a dump no matter how hard I tried for a week and probably was the most painfully thing I have ever experienced everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Cousin Eddie: I don't know why they call this stuff hamburger helper. It does just fine by itself, huh? I like it better than tuna helper myself, don't you, Clark?

Clark: You're the gourmet around here, Eddie.
