I just can't believe in reading this thread, that so many people have been almost blindly are trusting and doing what ever the media tells us.

Im with FoxMulder on this one, all this H1N1 stuff seems a bit rushed don't you think?

I'll stick to washing my hands and coughing in my sleeve thanks very much.

Can we assume that if you get the virus you will stay home and not clog up the emergency rooms?

Not what the 'media' is telling us, but what science is telling us.

I swear the anti-vaccination paranoia is starting to mimic 9/11 truthers more and more every day.

Not saying 'doubters' here are like that, its perfectly reasonable to question the testing and safety of the H1N1 shot, but for me its a matter of risk vs reward.

Why shouldn't he?

Until I'm promised that no one that doesn't take perfect care of themselves isn't using the health system I will use it for whatever my needs are.

Has there been zero cases of side effects to this shot?

If he's not going to trust the science behind, yes I have a problem. Especially when he trashes the other side for being blind.

There are side effects, yes, however they are stated ahead of time and the chances of someone getting them are very slim. To me the rewards of taking the shot out way any risks.

Sorry the side effect question was separate from my statement. I honestly wasn't sure.

However you could say that about a lot of things. People know the dangers (or science) of smoking, drinking, not using sunscreen, not putting on their seat belts, etc. You could go on forever but they are fine to use the health care system even though they knew the risks.

How small are the risks of getting the shot? And how big or small are the risks of not getting it?

Personally I don't plan on getting it, however that could change, and if I got sick I am going to use the resources that are available to me to get better. It is me who will be sick and in pain, not anyone here.

I'm not getting it untill the W.H.O. (not the band) start forcing people to take it, by declaring a full-on pandemic and exercising their form of "martial law" on everyone that's left. Even then I think I'll resist thereby breaking the law and probably be thrown in jail ......
they'll say~ what r u in for kid?
I'll say~ not gettin' the flu shot...............(Yup a real hard a$$).
they'll say~ welcome to the group W bench.......(and so the story will go).

If we're going to talk about the science, then you have aknowledge the lack of testing. Side effects aside, we don't even no if this particular vaccine works. No trials have been down where they have given one group a placebo and another the vaccine, therefore it is important for even vaccinated people to take all other precautions.

And that gets back to the Globe and Mail column stating that it is selfish not to get the vaccine. We have limited resources for our health care budget, and we will be spending it on people that can't be bothered to get the vaccine because anti-government people like Glenn Beck are telling them the government is out to get them. The column pointed out that our health care budget could much better be used on help for autistic children, purchasing new equipment, hiring more doctors... but instead, we will be spending it on crowded emergency rooms. Hospitals here in Ottawa are already turning people away and suggesting they go elsewhere for treatment.

-=-=-=-=-=

Obviously, I was going to get the vaccine as soon as I could, but it looks like this thread has just become moot for me. I've got a cough, a headache and really bad chills. And they say the chills are the precursor to the coming fever. I mean, I haven't even started with the fever yet and let me tell ya.... bring on the Gulf War Sydrome. I've jacked up the heat in the house to 25 and I'm shivering like an Inuit in his birthday suit. Don't worry, I'm pretty sure it's not communicable over the Internet.

Ironic wouldn't you say considering the country that 9/11 happened in hasn't cleared said vaccine.

Funny the way science can tell you different things.

I sincerely hope you're alright.

I find it crazy that relatively few people are actually going to get it. Probably fewer than those who get seasonal flu every year, yet so many people in this thread either have it, had it recently, or know many people who have it. At this rate, it's going to be the biggest epidemic the world has ever seen.

I've been to the doctor once in the past 11 years. Vaccination or not, if I get sick, I think I have the right to go.

Is this shot the answer? Has it proven to stop people from getting sick from H1N1 yet? What kind of testing has been done? Do we really understand the side effects?

There are too many questions to answer before I get that shot and if I die or get sick because I waited too long to make sure that is my problem.

That's pretty much how I feel, I was just being a smart ass about the size of the epidemic. I think the thing about this flu is the severity as countries in the southern hemisphere which just had their flu season, didn't experience the number of cases they thought they would... yet the number of cases being reported on CP seems to be a lot.

I hope it's being over-reported on here and it's not an actual representation of the country as a whole.

Well, it appears the childhood vaccination program (in Calgary at least. Perhaps all of Alberta) has been suspended so the nurses who do those vaccines can be re-deployed to give H1N1 vaccines. I've already been waiting to get my daughter in for her shots for over 6 weeks and her appointment was for Monday... now we have to wait for 4 more weeks until the end of November. I understand the H1N1 concerns but seriously... what's worse for babies? The flu? Or meningitis?!?!

They estimate that 400 people will die in Calgary of H1N1 (not sure what level of vaccination that assumes) Now lets assume that the vaccine is 70% effective. So if you have a 1 in 2500 chance of dying vs say 1 in 10,000 if you get the vaccine. What is that worth to you?

To me I am willing to take this Risk/Benefit even with unknown side effects.

On that note .....

Quote:
(CBS) If you've been diagnosed "probable" or "presumed" 2009 H1N1 or "swine flu" in recent months, you may be surprised to know this: odds are you didn’t have H1N1 flu.

In fact, you probably didn’t have flu at all. That's according to state-by-state test results obtained in a three-month-long CBS News investigation....

....While we waited for CDC to provide the data, which it eventually did, we asked all 50 states for their statistics on state lab-confirmed H1N1 prior to the halt of individual testing and counting in July. The results reveal a pattern that surprised a number of health care professionals we consulted. The vast majority of cases were negative for H1N1 as well as seasonal flu, despite the fact that many states were specifically testing patients deemed to be most likely to have H1N1 flu, based on symptoms and risk factors, such as travel to Mexico.

With most cases diagnosed solely on symptoms and risk factors, the H1N1 flu epidemic may seem worse than it is. For example, on Sept. 22, this alarming headline came from Georgetown University in Washington D.C.: "H1N1 Flu Infects Over 250 Georgetown Students."

H1N1 flu can be deadly and an outbreak of 250 students would be an especially troubling cluster. However, the number of sick students came not from lab-confirmed tests but from "estimates" made by counting "students who went to the Student Health Center with flu symptoms, students who called the H1N1 hotline or the Health Center's doctor-on-call, and students who went to the hospital's emergency room."

Without lab testing, it's impossible to know how many of the students actually had H1N1 flu. But the statistical trend indicates it was likely much fewer than 250.
