2nd of all, yep. There is way more to DJing than simply gathering a good list of music and hitting random.
Each song should be carefully picked to follow the previous. You gotta play thriller (probably only once), the song after thriller is equally important. People will come onto the dancefloor to dance to thriller. What is going to keep them there?
The energy of the night has to continue building or stay the same. Switching from a 80's song to a new hip hop song can ruin that energy. a good dj will morph the two songs into each other with songs inbetween
If you could I would look into hiring a DJ for the night.

sticking to songs people know is a good idea if you are just going the itunes route. Of course you gotta expand on that a little, just don't go too extreme and make it a indie themed music night.
