Throw in a 3rd vote for New Order. Some Pet Shop Boys too, while we're on the 80's train. Check out Gabriel & Dresden for some solid dance tunes - "Tracking Treasure Down" is a good one. Don't know how danceable it would be, but the new Alice in Chains song "Check my brain" freaking rocks.

If it were my party i would go with ambient stuff like this:

however as it seems like you are looking for straight up dance mixes id go with Fatboy Slim. Lets have none of this Black Eyed Pea or Buckcherry crap. You may want to check out these guys as well: (as long as you can handle the fact that they are from Edmonton)

Load up your iPod with some T-Pain and Akon tracks, chicks love the synth style voice on these tracks for dancing, and they've got some good remixes.

For dancing. Surf YouTube for DJ dance remixes of popular club songs like Rihanna, T.I., Katy Perry, Alex Burrows Cat Dolls, LMFAO, Akon etc.

Play any of the following when things have gotten sloppy. Maybe not the best for dancing but everyone who is hammered or likes the song will get into it.

Journey - Don't Stop Believing
Bryan Adams - Summer of '69
Bon Jovi - Livin' on a Prayer
Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline
Garth Brooks - Friends in Low Places
Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come on Eileen
Cheap Trick - I Want You to Want Me
Guns n Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine
Rick James - Super Freak

If the girls at the party aren't over 30 , here's some more appropriate suggestions:

LMFAO - Yes
David Guetta - Sexy Bitch (feat. Akon)
Kid Cudi - Day 'n' Nite (Crookers Remix)
Fedde Le Grand - Put Your Hand Up For Detroit
Hate to say it but the Chick dancy crowd loves Lada GaGa songs like 'Poker Face,' 'Love Game' and 'Just Dance'
Guru Josh Project - Infinity
Throw in a Rihanna song possibly a dance remix
Don't forget your Eric Pridz - Call on Me (Preferably with Video)
Katy Perry - Waking up in Vegas (Probably a club remix would be your best option)
Flo Rida - Right Round

I could probably go on all day . . . but that should get you started.

I don't know a lot about DJing, but from my experience getting them on the floor is the easy part, keeping them there is the hard part. So I would save Thriller for clutch timing when the floor is starting to empty, pop that on and I guarantee it will be full instantly.

I would stick to the crap everyone knows,
First of all, listening to MJ has always been cool.

2nd of all, yep. There is way more to DJing than simply gathering a good list of music and hitting random.
Each song should be carefully picked to follow the previous. You gotta play thriller (probably only once), the song after thriller is equally important. People will come onto the dancefloor to dance to thriller. What is going to keep them there?
The energy of the night has to continue building or stay the same. Switching from a 80's song to a new hip hop song can ruin that energy. a good dj will morph the two songs into each other with songs inbetween
If you could I would look into hiring a DJ for the night.

sticking to songs people know is a good idea if you are just going the itunes route. Of course you gotta expand on that a little, just don't go too extreme and make it a indie themed music night.

I'll post some recommendations later today when I get a chance.

Belly feat. Snoop Dogg - Hot .. that would be a good one for the girls.. again depending on age. What is the age group anyway?
