Default iPhone Users Thinking of Buying a GPS App... (Google turn-by-turn GPS!)

Don't.

Quote:
Google is announcing plans Wednesday to release a new Android application called Google Maps Navigation. When combined with a GPS-equipped mobile phone running Android 2.0, it provides turn-by-turn directions powered by Google Maps and a slick user interface that combines features such as voice recognition and Google Street View. Google Maps Navigation, like seemingly everything that emerges from Google, will be free.

[snip...]

However, Google is working with Apple on bringing it to the iPhone, and it's not ruling out licensing the software to makers of portable navigation devices used in cars throughout the world, said Gundotra, vice president of engineering at Google for mobile and developers. The process involving Apple is slightly different from the usual App Store submission process, because Maps is a built-in iPhone application, he said.
Save yourself $100 and wait to see how this new Google GPS thing works first.

Yeah, that's why I put this in its own thread. That TomTom thing is $200 if you get the cradle too...

I was close to buying the Tom Tom app. Given it's price, it should be something that comes with a free weeklong demo or something. Turn by turn with google would kick serious ass.

He really needs to listen to me more often. I'm expecting the GPS on the iPhone to improve in the next rendition. I happen to know a guy who just got hired on to work on it.. Let's just say he knows his stuff. He's the reason I know my stuff.

That guy. Is very very awkward. At talking to the camera.

I wonder how much more data that will use up, especially for those suckers (like me) on the 500 MB plan.

If Google ever gets into personal computing hardware, the PC vs. Apple debate would be over because Google would find a way to give away computers for free and somehow make billions in the process.

Have you tried switching to the 6GB/$30 plan?

(and yeah, that guy is awkward)

Advertising with Google is awesome. I pay $150 per month with them to advertise my site. In the past seven days, I've had 13,294 views of my ad and 106 clicks. Best bang for buck IMO.

To the best of my knowledge, they stopped offering that plan a little while after they first released the iPhone. So I was stuck with choosing 500 MB for $30 of 1 GB for $50....ya thanks Rogers.

They started it up again a few months back when the 3G S launched. Can always try to see if they'll add it for you.

At the very least, you should be able to get them to cave by threatening to jump ship to Telus. (If they ever finally release their data plans.)

Android will have it by end of month. Most people are predicting Android cell phone dominance within 2 yrs. Don't quite understand why Google doesn't make some of their apps Android only.

Im already starting to hope the jailbreak community figures out a way to allow Android to run on the iPhone. I'd like to try it out and see what all the fuss is about.

I think that Apple is going to have to open up to the developing community a little more to keep up with Android. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Also, I wouldn't be surprised to see Apple pull something out of their butts that no one anticipated. I've had both iphone and Android phone. My only complaint about the android phone I have is the hardware. The OS is up to par with the iphone, but I like it better because it is fully customizable so many different gui's out there now and pretty much lets you do what you want to it. I am going to be buying the next gen Android phone for Tmobile when it comes out because I just found out today my g1 can't use 2.0, but no big deal because I would have purchased it anyways for the hardware improvements.
